英検準2級長文｜except・unless・only ifの注意書きを読み違えない独自4英文20問【全訳・根拠】

英検準2級の長文問題では、案内の前半だけ読むと正しそうな選択肢に惑わされます。とくに本文末尾のexcept（〜を除いて）、unless（〜でない限り）、only if（〜の場合に限り）は条件の範囲を大きく変えます。『原則→例外→自分が当てはまるか』の順番で確認する20問の独自演習です。公式のEメール・説明文の内容一致問題とは異なる補強教材です。

最初に覚える条件表現

1. except for A＝Aを除いて。全体に適用される説明の例外を示す。
2. unless A＝Aでない限り／Aの場合を除き、否定条件に注目する。
3. only if A＝Aという条件を満たした場合に限り。条件を満たしても他の要件があり得る。
4. usually / however / during … の組み合わせは、通常ルールが特定期間に変更される目印。
5. must / may / can / might は義務、許可・可能、可能性の違いがある。

FAQ

unlessとonly ifは同じですか？

同義とは限りません。You can join unless you are under twelve. は12歳未満を除く一方、You can join only if you are over twelve. は12歳ちょうども除くなど、年齢境界で異なる場合があります。
