結論｜前置詞の後ろに動作を置くなら-ing形を使う
英検準2級の英文法でby reading・without checking・after finishing・before leaving・instead of buying・in addition to studyingのような表現を見たら、前置詞の後に動作を表す動名詞（動詞の-ing形）が続いています。She learned English by reading books.は「本を読むことで英語を学んだ」、He left without saying goodbye.は「別れの挨拶をせずに出発した」という意味です。

6つの基本形｜意味と語順を比較
- by＋-ing：by practicing（練習することによって）。手段・方法を示す。
- without＋-ing：without checking（確認せずに）。行わなかった動作。
- after＋-ing：after finishing the work（仕事を終えた後）。行動の順序。
- before＋-ing：before leaving home（家を出る前）。事前にすること。
- instead of＋-ing：instead of buying a new one（新しく買う代わりに）。代案を選ぶ。
- in addition to＋-ing：in addition to learning English（英語を学ぶことに加えて）。別の活動も追加する。
重要な違い｜after・beforeは節も導ける
After finishing the report, Ken went home.（レポートを終えた後、ケンは帰宅した）は、afterの後ろの動名詞句をケンの行動として解釈します。一方、After Ken finished the report, he went home.のように主語Kenを明示して節を続ける場合はfinishedという定形動詞が必要です。After Ken finishing…とするのはこの形では誤りです。
文の前半に-ing句だけを置く場合、通常は主節と同じ人・物がその動作を行います。After finishing dinner, the book was opened.では「誰が食事を終えたのか」が不自然になるので、After finishing dinner, Aya opened her book.などとし、行動する主語を一致させましょう。
in addition toのtoを不定詞と間違えない
In addition to studying English, Aya practices the piano. のtoは前置詞の一部です。「to＋動詞の原形」という不定詞ではないため、in addition to studyではなくin addition to studyingが適切です。これに対してAya wants to study English.ではwantの後にto不定詞が続いています。同じtoでも文法上の役割を確認します。

- 英文法：動名詞の後ろに目的語を続けられる。by reading books / without bringing lunchなど。
- 主語：Before leaving school, I checked my bag. では出発する人と確認する人は同じIであることを確認。

はい。After I finished my homework, …のように接続詞として節を導くこともできます。後ろの形によって区別します。
Q．in addition to studyは正しいですか？
動作を加えて述べる場合、通常はin addition to studyingとなります。このtoは不定詞の印ではなく前置詞です。
Q．動名詞句の主語は誰ですか？
