英検準2級if・whether・whether to・whether or notの違い｜条件と間接疑問の独自48課題【全解答】

英検準2級のifとwhetherは「もし〜なら」と「〜かどうか」の違いを理解すると、正しい語順で使えるようになります。 If it rains, we will stay home. のifは条件。I don’t know if she will come.のifは「来るかどうか」の間接疑問で、whetherに置き換えられます。一方、whether to doや前置詞の後のwhetherなど、ifでは自然に置き換えられない形もあります。慶英会独自の12場面48課題（4択・意味判断・誤文訂正・和文英訳）を掲載しました。

条件節のifと時の節のwhenを比較：英検準2級while・during・for・whenの独自48課題【時点・継続・同時進行】で、前後の節の意味も確かめてください。

まず結論｜ifとwhetherの基本

• 条件のif：If it rains tomorrow, we will stay home.（明日雨が降ったら家にいる）。未来の条件節では通常現在形。
• 間接疑問のif：I don’t know if she can come.（来られるかどうか分からない）。このifはwhetherと置き換えられる。
• whether to＋原形：We must decide whether to leave.（出発するかどうか決める）。if to leaveは不可。
• 前置詞＋whether：talk about whether the plan is safe.（計画が安全かどうか話す）。about ifの形を基本の書き言葉では避ける。
• whether or not＋節：Whether or not it rains, we will meet indoors.（雨が降っても降らなくても室内で会う）。ifを使うならor notの位置が変わる場合がある。

「どちらも正しい」場合は？

I wonder if the event is full. と I wonder whether the event is full. は、どちらも自然な英文です。英検の4択練習では正解が二つにならないよう、whether toのような構造条件がある設問を中心に用意しています。意味だけで機械的に一方を誤りと決めつけないでください。

よくある質問

ifとwhetherは同じですか？

「〜かどうか」の間接疑問では重なることがありますが、条件節、whether to、前置詞の後などでは使い分けが必要です。

I don’t know if she will come. は間違いですか？

正しい自然な英文です。これは未来の条件文ではなく、来るかどうかを尋ねる名詞節なのでwillが使えます。

whether to goは正しいですか？

正しいです。whether to goは「行くかどうか」。if to goは通常使いません。

whether or notはいつ使いますか？

二つの可能性（する・しない）の両方を明示するときに用います。Whether or not it rains, …は雨の有無にかかわらずという意味。
