  • may / could / not necessarily

Original passage|

A regional museum introduced replicas that visitors were allowed to touch. Its curators had noticed that exhibits protected behind glass offered limited information to people who could not see them clearly. The replicas copied the general shapes of several historical objects, and staff supplied audio descriptions of their size and purpose. The museum hoped that combining touch, speech, and conventional labels would make the exhibition more accessible without exposing fragile originals to unnecessary handling.

However, producing a replica involved decisions about which details to reproduce. Some objects had damaged surfaces, while others had patterns whose original appearance remained uncertain. A perfectly smooth model might be comfortable to touch but fail to represent an object’s texture. Conversely, reproducing a sharp edge could be unsafe. The museum also learned that people differed in how they preferred to explore an object. Some wanted guided explanations, whereas others preferred to examine a model independently.

The curators therefore tested several prototypes with visitors before deciding on a final design. They clearly distinguished surviving features of the originals from parts that had been reconstructed. They also provided an alternative to touching the models for visitors who preferred not to do so. Instead of claiming that a single form of access would suit everybody, the museum aimed to offer different ways to understand an object while making the limits of each representation clear.

1. Why did the museum introduce touchable replicas? (A) To make fragile originals available for unrestricted handling (B) To offer information to visitors who might have difficulty seeing objects (C) To replace every explanation with identical plastic models (D) To stop visitors from choosing different formats

問2. How did the museum protect its original objects? (A) It used replicas for handling instead of exposing fragile originals (B) It allowed every visitor to hold damaged artifacts (C) It removed all historical objects from storage (D) It prohibited audio explanations

Original passage|

A city museum prepared an exhibition about sounds heard in markets, workshops, and streets many decades ago. Its team collected surviving recordings and descriptions in old newspapers. Sound engineers improved the clarity of some damaged recordings and created additional audio scenes from historical descriptions. Visitors were enthusiastic about hearing a version of the city’s past, and the museum considered allowing schools to use the recordings in history lessons.

Yet realistic audio could create a misleading sense of certainty. A machine described in a document might have produced several different sounds depending on its condition and the surrounding buildings. Even an authentic recording could have been made years after the event it was meant to illustrate. The museum therefore used separate labels for original recordings, recordings improved through digital processing, and sounds newly reconstructed from evidence. Curators explained that a convincing reconstruction was still an interpretation rather than a direct recording of the past.

The team also tested how the exhibition could serve visitors with different hearing abilities. Written descriptions helped communicate some information, and certain rhythmic patterns were represented through vibrations. These approaches were not identical substitutes for sound, but they provided additional ways to explore the material. The museum decided to assess historical clarity and accessibility together before creating more audio scenes. Its goal was to encourage questions about the past, not to convince visitors that every recreated sound was unquestionably accurate.

8. What sources did the museum use for the audio project? (A) Only photographs taken by modern visitors (B) Only interviews with current shop owners (C) Surviving recordings and descriptions from old newspapers (D) The soundtracks of unrelated fictional films

問9. Why might a reconstructed machine sound be uncertain? (A) Its sound could have varied with its condition and surroundings (B) Every historical document contained a modern audio file (C) All old machines operated identically (D) The museum had measured every old street directly

問10. What could be true even of an authentic recording? (A) It always represented the exact event being discussed (B) It might have been recorded years later (C) It needed no information about its origin (D) It had necessarily been created by artificial intelligence

問11. Why did the curators provide different labels? (A) To ensure every sound was treated as equally certain (B) To hide which sounds were created recently (C) To prevent any use in schools (D) To distinguish originals, processed recordings, and reconstructions

問12. What accessibility options were explored? (A) Written descriptions and some vibrations (B) Only louder audio for all visitors (C) An exclusion of visitors with hearing difficulties (D) The replacement of all recordings with paintings

問13. Which qualification did the museum make about these options? (A) They were exact substitutes for every sound (B) They provided other ways to understand material, not identical experiences (C) They eliminated all historical uncertainty (D) They made it unnecessary to collect feedback

問14. What was the ultimate educational objective? (A) To prove that every reconstructed sound was exact (B) To replace historical research with entertainment (C) To encourage exploration while being transparent about uncertainty (D) To prohibit schools from using the exhibition

Original passage|

A heritage center planned a new exhibition of paintings whose colors had faded over time. Bright lighting could make details easier to see, but conservators were concerned that prolonged exposure might damage delicate surfaces further. The center examined several ways to display the paintings while keeping the original objects protected. It also prepared digital images that visitors could enlarge to study patterns that were difficult to distinguish under subdued lighting.

The digital images raised a separate issue. Staff had adjusted contrast in some photographs so that faint lines would appear more clearly. Those adjustments were useful for study, but they could make certain colors appear more vivid than they did on the paintings themselves. Curators therefore allowed visitors to switch between unadjusted photographs and enhanced versions. Each digital image included a note stating what had been changed. Staff also avoided presenting hypothetical restorations as if they were photographs of the original surface.

During a pilot exhibition, visitors appreciated the enlarged images, but some found the explanations difficult to follow. The center simplified its labels without removing information about uncertainty. Conservators continued to monitor lighting conditions and the paintings’ physical state. Instead of treating greater brightness as the only measure of a successful exhibition, the center aimed to balance accessibility, accurate interpretation, and long-term preservation.

15. Why were conservators concerned about bright lighting? (A) It made all details impossible to see (B) It immediately restored all faded colors (C) It eliminated the need for photographs (D) Prolonged exposure could cause further damage

問16. What did the center provide to make details easier to study? (A) Enlargeable digital images (B) Only the original paintings under stronger lights (C) A requirement for visitors to touch each painting (D) A single reproduction with no explanation

問17. Why could contrast adjustments be misleading? (A) They always removed every historic pattern (B) They might make colors appear more vivid than on the originals (C) They proved that the paintings had never faded (D) They made all digital images identical

問18. What did the museum do to clarify digital changes? (A) It removed all unadjusted images (B) It permanently replaced the paintings with models (C) It offered original and enhanced photographs with explanatory notes (D) It stopped monitoring the light

問19. What was the problem with some explanations during the trial? (A) Visitors found them difficult to follow (B) They omitted every mention of the paintings (C) They claimed that all images were original (D) They were available only after the exhibition closed

問20. How did the center respond to that feedback? (A) It removed all information about uncertainty (B) It made the labels clearer while retaining qualifications (C) It increased lighting without further monitoring (D) It concluded that visitors did not need context

問21. What does the passage suggest about a successful exhibition? (A) It should maximize brightness at all costs (B) Digital editing always makes a display historically exact (C) It must balance access, accurate interpretation, and preservation (D) Uncertainty should be concealed to entertain visitors
