Original passage|

During preparations for a new public library, workers discovered several pieces of pottery beneath a paved square. Construction was temporarily paused while archaeologists examined the area. The team recorded the exact positions of the fragments and photographed the layers of soil in which they were found. Some pieces had similar patterns, suggesting that they might once have belonged to the same container. A local newspaper quickly described the discovery as evidence of an ancient marketplace.

The archaeologists warned that this conclusion was premature. The pottery could have been discarded in several different ways, and later construction might have disturbed the soil. Although objects found in a deeper layer were often older than those above them, the ground at this site had been altered by earlier building work. A decorative pattern might help researchers compare the fragments with objects found elsewhere, but it could not by itself establish the original purpose of the location.

The team proposed examining other materials, including traces of fireplaces and building foundations, before drawing a wider conclusion. It also arranged for the most fragile pieces to be stabilized and stored. The city revised the construction schedule so that the findings could be documented without unnecessarily delaying the library project. The archaeologists emphasized that a discovery becomes historically meaningful through careful interpretation of its context, not simply through the excitement of finding an old object.

Original passage|

A research group studying a former settlement used instruments to measure changes beneath the ground without digging. Some readings suggested long, straight features that might have been the remains of walls. The method helped the group decide where a small excavation could be most informative, since removing soil from an archaeological site was costly and could permanently alter what remained. The team prepared maps combining the instrument readings with earlier records of the landscape.

However, the instruments did not directly display photographs of buildings underground. Differences in moisture, buried stones, and modern pipes could produce patterns that resembled historical structures. An unusually straight line on a map was therefore a possible clue rather than proof of a wall. In addition, some features were difficult to detect because the soil conditions reduced the strength of the signals. A blank area on the map did not necessarily mean that nothing of historical interest lay below it.

The group selected two limited areas for excavation and compared what it found with the earlier measurements. In one area, the researchers uncovered traces consistent with an old foundation; in another, the unusual signal appeared to have come from a modern drainage pipe. The team published both results, explaining why its initial interpretation had changed. Its members argued that measuring technology was valuable not because it removed uncertainty, but because it helped researchers test questions more carefully while reducing unnecessary disturbance.

8. Why did the group use underground measuring instruments? (A) To choose promising areas while limiting excavation (B) To guarantee the exact age of every structure (C) To remove all underground objects automatically (D) To replace the need for historical records

問9. What might a long straight feature indicate? (A) A printed photograph of an ancient city (B) A guaranteed underground road (C) Possible remains of a wall (D) An empty area with no materials

問10. Why could measurements be misleading? (A) The instruments were used only above the sea (B) Moisture, stones, or modern pipes could resemble old structures (C) No readings were recorded (D) The site contained no modern materials

問11. What did a blank area on the map mean? (A) It conclusively ruled out all remains (B) It was the oldest part of the settlement (C) It had been completely excavated (D) Undetected historical features could still exist there

問12. What was found in the two excavated areas? (A) One possible old foundation and one modern drainage pipe (B) Two identical ancient temples (C) Only modern roads in both locations (D) No physical traces of any kind

問13. Why did the team publish its changed interpretation? (A) To pretend its first theory had been fully correct (B) To explain how new evidence revised the original reading (C) To show that measurements can never be useful (D) To stop other researchers from testing the site

問14. What is the central benefit of the technology? (A) It removes every kind of uncertainty (B) It guarantees that no excavation is needed (C) It supports careful tests while limiting unnecessary disturbance (D) It proves every straight line is ancient

Original passage|

A small heritage center managed a historical building whose interior walls contained faded paintings. Visitors wanted to see how the room might have looked when the colors were fresh. Instead of repainting the original walls, the center commissioned a digital reconstruction displayed on screens. Specialists photographed the surviving patterns and compared them with descriptions in old documents. They then created several possible color schemes, clearly marking the parts supported by direct evidence and those based on educated guesses.

Some visitors initially believed that the brightest digital version showed exactly what the room had looked like centuries earlier. Curators explained that cameras could record remaining pigments but could not always reveal colors that had disappeared completely. Written descriptions also sometimes used terms whose meanings had changed over time. A realistic-looking image was therefore not necessarily a historically exact image. The team worried that presenting one reconstruction without explanation might turn uncertainty into an apparent fact.

The center revised the exhibition to display different versions side by side, with notes explaining the evidence for each choice. Visitors could switch between a photograph of the current wall and the digital interpretations. The center also limited light near the original paintings to avoid unnecessary exposure. The curators concluded that digital tools could make a difficult subject easier to imagine, provided visitors understood the difference between surviving evidence and a reasoned interpretation.

15. Why did the center create digital reconstructions? (A) To replace every original wall (B) To show possible earlier appearances without repainting the originals (C) To eliminate the need for old documents (D) To prove that all paintings were made in the same year

問16. How were different color schemes developed? (A) By examining surviving patterns and old descriptions (B) By asking visitors to select random colors only (C) By copying an unrelated modern advertisement (D) By replacing the old paintings with new ones

問17. Why could a vivid image be misleading? (A) Digital screens are always broken (B) Every pigment was perfectly preserved (C) A realistic image could contain uncertain guesses (D) Curators had refused to display any evidence

問18. What was one difficulty with written descriptions? (A) They were all written in modern English (B) They listed exact colors in digital codes (C) They were always stored next to the paintings (D) Color terms may have changed meaning over time

問19. How did the exhibition change? (A) It displayed alternative versions and evidence notes (B) It removed all explanations (C) It allowed visitors to repaint the original walls (D) It hid the current condition of the room

問20. Why did the center limit light near the original paintings? (A) To stop all visitors from seeing the exhibition (B) To avoid unnecessary exposure of fragile originals (C) To improve screen brightness everywhere (D) To make the colors disappear faster

問21. What conclusion did the curators reach? (A) Digital images are always perfect historical records (B) Visitors should never see a reconstruction (C) Reconstruction can help if evidence is distinguished from interpretation (D) Only one reconstruction should be allowed
