fewer studentsとless time、the number of applicationsとthe amount of waste、few/a few、little/a littleを慶英会の独自40問(英文解釈12・文脈4択12・訂正8・独自4長文8問)で学びます。

fewer passengers
less electricity/less than 20 minutes
  • the number of A:「Aの数」で単数扱い。The number of applications is rising.
  • a number of A:「多くのA」で複数扱い。A number of applicants are waiting.
  • the amount of A:不可算名詞Aの量。the amount of food waste
  • a few / a little:少しは存在しているという含み

A fictional library introduced a shorter reservation form. The number of applications increased after the change, but fewer visitors asked staff for assistance. The director welcomed the results while warning that more applications did not mean every user found the system accessible. Some households lacked reliable internet connections. The library planned to speak with people who did not use the online system before expanding it.

D1. What happened after the change?

  1. The number of applications rose.
  2. No one applied.
  3. Every visitor had internet access.
  4. The library closed.

D2. Why was additional research needed?

  1. Every applicant failed.
  2. The form was never tested.
  3. Application counts did not prove accessibility for all.
  4. All services were free.

A town renovated a public building to use less energy. During the following month, the amount of electricity consumed was lower than before. However, fewer events had also been held during the same period. Engineers therefore cautioned that the renovation alone had not been proved responsible for the reduction. They proposed comparing similar months and recording how many rooms were used before claiming permanent savings.

D3. What decreased after renovation?

  1. The number of all public buildings.
  2. The amount of electricity consumed.
  3. Every electricity price.
  4. The number of engineers.

D4. What limited the conclusion?

  1. All rooms became inaccessible.
  2. There were no records.
  3. All events doubled.
  4. Fewer events could also have reduced use.

An agency compared two bus routes. Fewer passengers used the rural route, but those passengers traveled farther on average. Staff considered running a few additional buses in the evening. There was little evidence that the change would improve access for every family because people who did not already use public transport had not been interviewed. The agency decided to collect more information before introducing a permanent timetable.

D5. Which route had fewer passengers?

  1. The urban route.
  2. Both had the same number.
  3. The rural route.
  4. No routes were studied.

D6. Why was another survey planned?

  1. The agency had proven full accessibility.
  2. Bus travel was banned.
  3. All families had been interviewed.
  4. Current nonusers had not been consulted.

A school recorded the amount of food discarded each week. Less food was wasted during some weeks, but staff noticed that fewer pupils had attended school during part of the trial. The principal said there was a little evidence that better planning might help, yet permanent success had not been established. The school decided to compare waste per meal served with total waste, rather than judging the program by a single figure.

D7. What else changed during the trial?

  1. All suppliers closed.
  2. Every lunch was canceled.
  3. All food became free.
  4. Fewer pupils attended school.

D8. What did the principal decide to compare?

  1. Waste per meal and the total amount.
  2. Only the color of lunch boxes.
  3. Only the names of suppliers.
  4. Only the number of dishes.

A:The number of applications rose. The number of applications increased。

C:Application counts did not prove accessibility for all. 根拠:did not mean every user … accessible。

B:The amount of electricity consumed. 根拠:amount of electricity consumed was lower。

D:Fewer events could also have reduced use. 根拠:fewer events had also been held。

D5 正解C:The rural route. Fewer passengers used the rural route。

D:Current nonusers had not been consulted. 根拠:had not been interviewed。

A:Waste per meal and the total amount. 根拠:compare waste per meal … with total waste。

The amount of waste decreased. The number of waste bags decreased.

no evidenceとa little evidenceも区別します。
