英検4級wait for・look forward to・can’t wait toの違い｜待つ・楽しみにする独自36問【全解答】

「待つ」はwait、「楽しみにする」はlook forward to、「早く〜したい」はcan’t wait to。英検4級の会話文・長文では、同じ未来の話でも「相手やバスを待つ」「起こることを願う」「楽しみにしている」を読み違えると、人物の気持ちや行動の設問を落とします。ポイントは直後に来る語の形と、実際に起こる予定なのか、本人の希望なのかを区別することです。

英検4級でこの違いを学ぶ理由

日本英語検定協会の英検4級試験内容によると、4級はリーディング35分（短文15問・会話5問・語句整序5問・長文内容一致10問）とリスニング約30分を実施します。英検Can-doリストでは日常的な短い文章の概要理解などが示されています。look forward to＋動名詞やexpect＋目的語＋to不定詞などの細かな語法が必ず4級に出題される、という意味ではありません。5級から4級、さらに学校英語へ接続する補強教材です。

「I am waiting for my friend.」は友達が来るまで待つ具体的行動です。「I am looking forward to seeing my friend.」は会うことを楽しみにしている気持ちです。両方が同時に成立する場面もありますが、設問では「どこで待つか」「何を楽しみにするか」を分けて尋ねられます。

最重要の形：look forward to seeing、can’t wait to see、hope to see。同じtoでも前置詞と不定詞の違いがあり、直後が-ingになるか動詞原形になるかが変わります。学校の定期テストで差がつく箇所です。

希望と予想も別：I hope the train arrives on time. は時間どおり来てほしいという願い。I expect the train to arrive on time. は時間どおり到着すると見込むことです。ニュースや時刻表の「予定」と人物の「期待」を混同しないようにしましょう。

短文の採点法：1〜4問は「誰・何を待つか」、5〜8問は「願い・時点・予想」、9〜12問は「toの後ろの形」を復習しましょう。選択肢の語を日本語だけで選ばず、後続する名詞・節・動詞を見てください。

3日目：長文1・2を読み、日付、集合時刻、待機場所、希望を色分けする。本文にない行動を推測して選ばないでください。

4日目：長文3・4を読み、leave／meet、open／beginなど時刻の異なる出来事を表にします。

5日目：短文と会話を解き直し、正解だけでなく誤答のうち意味が違う語を2つ説明します。

6日目：36問のうち誤答だけを解き直し、自分の英語の例文を「待つ・願う・楽しみ」の3種類で1つずつ書きます。

7日目：公式過去問の会話文・長文に進み、教材で練習した区別を新しい文章で使えるか確認します。7日という日数は慶英会の提案で、公式の必要学習期間ではありません。

よくある質問

look forward to goは間違いですか。

通常はlook forward to goingとします。このtoは前置詞で、後ろに動詞を置くなら-ing形です。

can’t wait toとwait forはどう違いますか。

wait forは人・物などを待つ行動、can’t wait toは早く何かをしたい気持ちです。例：wait for the bus／can’t wait to travel。

hopeとexpectは同じ意味ですか。

hopeはそうなってほしい希望、expectはそうなるだろうという予想を中心に表します。文脈では重なる場合もありますが、選択問題では話し手の根拠や後続する文型を確認します。
