英検4級の英文でthanとthenを混同すると、二つのものを比べているのか、出来事の順番を示しているのか分からなくなります。thanは比較の「～より」、thenは順序を示す「それから・その後」です。中1・中2向けに、短文24問と長文2題8問、計32問の全解答・全訳・根拠解説を掲載します。

thanとthenの基本の違い

語中心の意味例文
than〜より（比較の基準）My bag is bigger than yours.
thenそれから・その後（時系列・手順）First, wash your hands. Then, eat lunch.

大きさ・速さ・長さ・難しさを比べるときはbigger、faster、longer、easierなどの比較級＋thanが典型です。何かをして次に別のことをするときにはFirst… Then…のように順序を示します。thenは他の文脈で「そのとき」「それなら」などの意味にもなりますが、本教材では基本的な順序を中心に学びます。
