4表現の違い / 40問の演習 / 全解答と全文和訳 / 復習法

had to・didn’t have to・couldn’t・mustn’tの違い

had to:We had to leave early.(早く出る必要があった)/didn’t have to:We didn’t have to buy tickets.(券を買う必要がなかった)/couldn’t:We couldn’t get on the bus.(バスに乗れなかった)/mustn’t:You mustn’t enter this room.(入室禁止)。

didn’t have toは『必要がなかった』で、『実際にしなかった』とは限りません。一方、couldn’tは実行できなかったことを述べます。mustn’tは『禁止』であり、don’t have to(必要がない)とは違います。had toの後ろ、didn’t have toの後ろ、couldn’tの後ろ、mustn’tの後ろはいずれも動詞原形です。
