日本英語検定協会が公表する4級の試験内容には、身近な会話と掲示・案内、Eメールなどの内容理解が含まれます。この教材は「予定変更」の語彙を理解する独自補強問題で、postponeなど発展的な表現も含まれます。個別の語句が必ず4級に出題されると保証するものではありません。記述式の訂正問題も公式形式とは別の学校英文法演習です。

cancel・postpone・delay・move・changeの意味の違い

中止と延期は異なります。Class canceledはクラスそのものが行われないことを意味しますが、Class postponed until next Sundayは次の日曜に開催予定が移ったことを示します。予定変更が起きても「実際には開催されるか」を本文で確認してください。

遅延と運休も異なります。Train 7 was canceledならその便が運休、Train 9 was delayed by 15 minutesなら15分遅れで運行するという意味です。路線すべてが運休するとは限りません。

会場変更は中止ではありません。The music show was moved to the gym, but still begins at ten.なら会場が体育館へ変わり、開始時刻は変わりません。When／Whereのどちらを質問されているか注意しましょう。

cancelとpostponeは実際の場面で重なる言い方があり、canceled and rescheduledという表現もあります。本教材では一つの判断に必要な『開催の有無・新しい日・新しい場所』を明示し、選択肢の意味が曖昧にならないようにしています。

Another train, Train 9, was delayed by fifteen minutes and would leave at nine forty-five instead of nine thirty. Ken decided to take Train 9.
