英検3級の天気とイベント案内に役立つ表現
- weather forecast：天気予報。The forecast says …
- cloudy / sunny / rainy / snowy：曇り・晴れ・雨・雪の天気
- light rain / heavy rain：弱い雨／強い雨
- strong winds / thunderstorm：強風／雷雨
- around 14 degrees Celsius：摂氏14度前後

- postponed to Tuesday：火曜に延期された
- canceled：中止された。延期とは区別
- instead：代わりに。旧予定と新予定を切り替える

天気を表す形容詞には sunny / cloudy / windy / rainy などがあります。It is cloudy. と There are clouds in the sky. は似た天気の状態を別の表現で述べています。It may rain. は可能性、It is raining now. は現在雨が降っている状態です。文法が似ていても、予報と実際の現状は区別しましょう。
14 degreesと14 degrees Celsiusの読み方
around 14 degrees Celsius は摂氏14度前後という意味です。around があるため厳密に14.0度と決めているわけではありません。英検3級では気温の単位が出る可能性もありますが、今回の練習では気温自体の計算を求めず、着るもの・屋外活動の説明と結び付けて読みます。
天気による予定変更を読む4ステップ
①予報なのか、現在の状態なのか
The forecast says it may rain. は雨の可能性を示す予報であり、必ず降るという意味ではありません。It is raining now. は現在雨が降っている事実です。may・might・possible・chance のような表現があれば、確実性を言い切らないようにしましょう。
②延期・中止・場所変更を分ける
postponed は別の日に延期すること、canceled は中止です。The reading circle will be held inside Room B instead. なら開催日を変えず会場を屋内へ変更する場合があります。予定日・会場・開催の有無のどれが変わったかを本文から確認します。
③if条件と最終決定の時刻を分ける
If there is heavy rain at seven, the walk will be postponed. と書かれた案内では、7時という判断条件があり、その時点より前に必ず延期とは限りません。We will post our decision by seven thirty. は決定を発表する期限です。条件となる時刻と通知の時刻は異なることがあります。
④持ち物と禁止物を一つずつ整理する
Bring a raincoat and walking shoes. Do not bring umbrellas. ならレインコートと歩きやすい靴が必要で、傘は持参しないという意味です。Water will be provided. なら主催者側が水を準備します。公式過去問でも、このような持参・禁止・支給の語の違いを読む力が役立ちます。

天候の英文で起きる典型的な5つの誤読
- may rainを確定と読む：可能性であって必ず降るわけではない
- if条件を見落とす：雨なら延期、という条件付きである
- 旧集合場所を答える：north entrance, not west gateなら北口
- 最終連絡の時刻と開催時刻を混同：7:30発表と9:00開始は別
- 提供される物を持参物に含める：provide waterなら主催者が用意
天気の話題は英検3級のEメールやスピーキングにも応用できます。例えば友達へ If it rains on Sunday, let’s visit the museum instead. と提案したり、Please bring a light jacket because it may be cold. と説明したりできます。ただし実際の英検ライティングでは、与えられた質問へ直接回答することを優先してください。
