英検3級の予定表・Eメール・長文で、21st・22nd・23rdなどの序数や in October / on October 5 / at 7:30 の違いがあいまいな中学生へ。英語では数字の読み方が日付で変わります。May 3rdは May third、November 21stは November twenty-first です。また、月は in October、日付は on October fifth、時刻は at seven thirty が基本です。register by Friday は金曜までの締切ですが、open until six は6時まで営業が続くことなので、byとuntilも同じ意味ではありません。本記事では、序数・日付・曜日・時刻・申込期限を、慶英会独自40問と全解答・14日間復習でまとめて学べる無料教材として公開します。

序数は1st・2nd・3rdと11th・12th・13thで異なる
1st＝first、2nd＝second、3rd＝third
January first は1月1日、May third は5月3日、April second は4月2日の読み方です。1はoneですが、日付ではfirstのような序数を使うのが基本です。日にちの数字そのものと、何番目かを示す序数を区別しましょう。
11th・12th・13thは例外に注意
November 11th = November eleventh、December 12th = December twelfth、February 13th = February thirteenth のように読みます。末尾が1・2・3の数字でも、11・12・13ではそれぞれst・nd・rdではなくthです。11st・12nd・13rdと書かないようにしましょう。
21st・22nd・23rd、31st
June 21st = June twenty-first、July 22nd = July twenty-second、August 23rd = August twenty-third。31stはthirty-firstと読みます。数字の最後の1・2・3に対応してst・nd・rdを使いますが、11・12・13だけは例外と覚えると整理しやすくなります。
英検3級の読解では October 21 と数字だけで書かれる場合もあります。日にちを読むときはOctober twenty-firstと読めます。また the twenty-first of October という語順も使われます。表記や読み方の違いで別の日付だと誤解しないでください。
in October / on Monday / at 7:30の使い分け
- in＋月・年：in October / in 2026
- on＋曜日：on Friday / on Mondays
- on＋具体的な日付：on October fifth / on May third
- at＋時刻：at seven / at two thirty
- in＋一般的な時間帯：in the morning / in the afternoon / in the evening
- at night：夜に、という慣用表現
- on＋特定の曜日と時間帯：on Monday morning / on Friday evening
My exam is in October. なら試験の月だけを示し、My exam is on October fifth. なら特定の日付を示します。It begins at seven. は時計の時刻を伝える文です。何の情報を答える必要があるかを区別しましょう。
We have English class on Monday morning. は月曜の朝を示します。in the morning だけなら一般的な朝の時間帯です。曜日が付いた場合にはonになる点が、学校の語順整序や英作文でよく混同されます。
next Friday・this Monday・last Sundayの前置詞
I’ll see you next Friday. や I met him last Sunday. では、通常next・last・thisなどが付く時間表現の前にonを置きません。See you on Friday. と比較してください。すべての曜日表現に必ずonを付けるのではなく、語句全体を確認することが重要です。
期限のby・継続のuntil・期間のfor
Please register by Friday.：金曜までに申し込む
Register by Friday. は申込を金曜までに終える締切を示します。Please send the form by Thursday at noon. なら木曜正午までという意味です。通常、このbyは期限の範囲内で完了することを表します。
The library is open until six.：6時まで開いている
The library is open until six. は開館状態が6時まで継続することを示します。The library is open by six. なら遅くとも6時には開いているといった異なる意味になり、終了時刻にはなりません。締切・継続を区別してください。
from two to fourとfor two hours
We studied from two to four. は2時から4時という時間帯、We studied for two hours. は2時間という長さです。during the class は授業の間にという場面を示しますが、for two hours と同じ『2時間』の意味ではありません。数字と前置詞を一組で読み取りましょう。
英検3級の序数・日付・曜日・時刻40問
問1〜20は4択、問21〜30は誤文訂正、問31〜36は和文英訳、問37〜40は独自の掲示・お知らせ文2本の読解です。序数は数字と英語の対応、in/on/atは時間の単位、by/untilは条件を意識して答えましょう。
第1セット｜問1〜20：序数・前置詞の4択

第4セット｜問37〜40：コンサート・図書館のお知らせ
慶英会独自英文1：SCHOOL MUSIC DAY: The autumn concert will take place in November. It is scheduled for November 21, and it will begin at 2:30 p.m. Students taking part in the concert must arrive by two. The school hall will stay open until five. Families should register by November 13. The choir will practice for two hours on the Friday before the concert.

全40問の正解と理由
誤答の多くは、数字の英語が出てこないという問題だけでなく、日付と時刻に合う前置詞や締切条件の読み間違いから生じます。何番目・何月・何日・何時・いつまでのどれが問われているかを確認してから解説を見ましょう。
問1〜20：序数・選択
問1の答え：fourth。理由：4番目の月には序数fourth。
問2の答え：first。理由：日付January firstと読む。
問3の答え：third。理由：May 3rdはMay third。
問4の答え：eleventh。理由：11thはeleventhで11stではない。
問5の答え：twelfth。理由：12thはtwelfthで綴りが不規則。
問6の答え：thirteenth。理由：13thはthirteenth。13rdにしない。
問7の答え：twenty-first。理由：21stはtwenty-first。

問35の答え：We studied English from two to four in the afternoon.。理由：from … to … は時間帯の始点と終点。
問36の答え：Please submit your application form by Friday.。理由：締切はby Friday。
問37〜40：読解
問37の答え：November 21.。理由：scheduled for November 21。21日はtwenty-first。
問38の答え：At 2:30 p.m.。理由：begin at 2:30 p.m.。
問39の答え：At 10:15 a.m.。理由：begins at 10:15 a.m.。
問40の答え：July.。理由：next class … in July。
間違えた原因を4種類に分類する
- 序数の綴り：twelfth・twenty-first・twenty-thirdを確認。
- 月と日付の混同：in October / on October fifth。
- 曜日・時刻の混同：on Monday / at seven thirty。
- 期限・継続の混同：register by Friday / open until six。
同じ形式を繰り返し解くだけでなく、自分の学校の時間割や架空の予定表を英文にしてください。The event is in November. It begins on November twenty-first at two thirty. のように月・日付・時刻を一つの流れで説明すれば、文法を実際の案内文に応用できます。

- Day 2：11th/12th/13thの例外を練習。
- Day 3：21st/22nd/23rd/31stの序数を練習。

- Day 14：公式の英検3級過去問で日付・時間に関する英文を探す。
英検3級の実際の会話・長文では、日時の情報が複数登場しても設問が求めているのは特定の一つです。開催日・申込締切・集合時刻・開始時刻を分けて読み、数字だけが合っている選択肢を安易に選ばないようにしましょう。

Q. 11st・12nd・13rdは正しいですか？
A. 誤りです。11th・12th・13thです。eleventh・twelfth・thirteenthと読みます。
Q. in Octoberとon October 5の違いは？
A. in Octoberは月を示し、on October fifthは具体的な日付を示します。
Q. on Monday morningとin Monday morningのどちら？
A. 曜日が付くならon Monday morningが基本です。一般的な朝という意味ならin the morningです。
Q. by Fridayとuntil Fridayは同じですか？
A. いいえ。by Fridayはその日までの期限、until Fridayはある状態・行為が金曜まで続くという意味です。動詞と一緒に判断してください。
