Last spring, Yuta’s class noticed that some visitors had difficulty finding the reading room in the town library. The students wanted to make a clearer map for people who were visiting for the first time. They walked through the building with a librarian and wrote down the places where visitors often asked questions.

First, the class drew a map with the entrance, reading room, restrooms, and elevator. The old map had many small words, so they used larger letters and shorter sentences. They also asked the librarian to check the locations before printing the new version.

After one week, the class asked twelve visitors about the map. Nine said it helped them find rooms more easily. Some students said the new map was now perfect, but the teacher explained that twelve opinions could not show what every visitor thought. The class decided to ask more people, including visitors who used the elevator.

Yuta learned that a useful map should show correct information and be easy to read. Next term, the class hopes to make a new version with clearer signs for the elevator and emergency exits.

  1. Why did the class want to make a new map?

    1. To sell more library cards.
    2. To build a larger library.
    3. To help first-time visitors find rooms.
    4. To make the reading room smaller.
  2. Who checked the locations before the map was printed?

    1. A librarian.
    2. Every student in town.
    3. A bus driver.
    4. The town mayor.
  3. How many visitors said the new map was helpful?

    1. Three.
    2. Twelve.
    3. Twenty-one.
    4. Nine.
  4. Why did the teacher want more opinions?

    1. The map had never been printed.
    2. Twelve opinions were not enough to represent everyone.
    3. The library had no elevator.
    4. The new map had no entrance.
  5. What will the class work on next term?

    1. A new school cafeteria.
    2. A larger aquarium.
    3. Clearer elevator and emergency-exit signs.
    4. A new school bus.

Part 4|Writing2

  1. C:To help first-time visitors find rooms.

    本文根拠:make a clearer map for people … first time。

  5. C:Clearer elevator and emergency-exit signs.

本文根拠:make … clearer signs for the elevator and emergency exits。

We made the letters larger and shortened the sentences on our map. Next term, we will improve the signs for the elevator and emergency exits.

Yes, I do. Clear maps help visitors find important places without getting lost. Making maps also teaches students to check facts carefully, so this work is useful.
