まず『誰に・何が・いつ・どこで』の4つを区別する

①聞き取った数字に役割を付ける

校内放送に8:45・9:15・9:30という3つの時刻がある場合、発表する生徒の到着、その他の生徒の到着、発表開始という別々の出来事を指す可能性があります。単に最初に聞こえた数字を答えにするのでなく、近くの arrive / start / leave / register / check in と結び付けましょう。

Runners need to check in by nine forty. The race begins at ten. は、受付締切が9時40分で、競技開始は10時という意味です。by はその時刻までに済ませることを表すため、開始時刻を尋ねる設問に9時40分を答えないよう注意してください。

②古い案内ではなく変更後の案内を選ぶ

The 10:20 train has been canceled. Please take the 10:35 train instead. なら、利用できる後の電車は10時35分です。originally / at first / was planned for の後にある日時は古い情報かもしれません。but / however / instead / now のような切り替えを聞き、最後に有効な予定を確認してください。

ただし、設問が「What was the original time?」と聞いていれば変更前の時刻が正解です。いつも変更後を答えるのではなく、質問が元の予定を尋ねるのか、今使う予定を尋ねるのかで判断します。

③義務と不要・許可・任意を混同しない

Students must bring their speech notes. は持参が必要、You do not have to bring a microphone. は持参不要、The quiz is optional. は参加が任意という意味です。mustn’t は禁止であり、don’t have to は不要であるため、同じNoの情報だと思わないようにしましょう。

Free admission（入場無料）も、予約不要や空席ありと同じではありません。The show is full. は満席、Twenty seats remain. は20席空きがあるという意味です。情報の種類を区別してください。

④if・only if・underで適用条件を確かめる

If heavy rain is expected, the festival will move to the following Sunday. は、大雨予報という条件付きの延期です。必ず延期されるわけではありません。Children under ten must enter with an adult. は10歳未満の子どもが対象で、10歳ちょうどは含みません。誰が対象か・何が条件かを把握して初めて放送の指示を正しく理解できます。

よく出る放送表現を意味別に確認

• Attention, passengers：乗客のみなさんへの呼び掛け。対象者を示す
• has been canceled：中止・運休になった。現在の利用可否に影響する
• instead：代わりに。変更後の案内を示す
• by 10:30：10時30分までに。締切と開始を区別する
• not … but …：前者ではなく後者。利用できる選択肢を決める
• optional：任意。参加の義務はない
• will provide：主催者が支給する。本人の持参物とは異なる
• sold out / full：売り切れ・満席。free＝無料と混同しない
• following Sunday：次の日曜日。延期先を示す
• under ten：10歳未満。年齢の境界を確認する

Welcome to the City Science Museum. Today’s robot show will start at eleven in Hall A. The second show was planned for three, but it will begin at three thirty because the staff need more time to prepare. Tickets for the morning show are sold out, but there are still twenty seats for the afternoon show. Children under ten must enter with an adult. 間違いが起こりやすい5つの状況

1. 発表者と一般参加者：学校の放送で8:45は発表する生徒、9:15はほかの生徒という違いがあります。2. 運休と代替交通：駅の10:20は運休、10:35が代替列車です。3. 入場料と入場条件：博物館では学生500円ですが、10歳未満の入場には大人の同行が必要です。4. 満席と残席：博物館午前は満席、午後には20席あります。5. 中止確定と条件付き延期：地域行事は大雨予報の場合の延期であり、予報が出る前から無条件で延期と決まっているわけではありません。

英検3級のEメール・面接への応用

Eメールで友人に変更後の日時を伝えるなら The meeting will start at ten instead of nine. のように書けます。ただし実際のEメール問題では受信メールの二つの質問に答えることが優先です。面接では Could you say that again, please? のような聞き返し表現もありますが、試験中は協会の指示を守ってください。

Q. 英検3級リスニングの第1部と第2・3部の放送回数は？

A. 公式の形式では第1部は1回、第2・3部は2回です。本教材は放送台本の内容整理であり、音源は付属しません。

Q. nowとinsteadの前に出た日時は必ず誤りですか？

A. 質問が現在の予定を聞くなら変更後を使います。ただし『元の予定は？』という質問なら古い日時が正答になります。
