英検2級ReadingやNEW TREASUREの定期テストで would rather・would prefer・had better・be supposed to を見たとき、全部「〜すべき」と訳していませんか。これらは個人の好み、丁寧な選択、強い助言、外部から期待される予定・決まりをそれぞれ表します。例えば I would rather use a printed guide. は本人の好み、Visitors are supposed to bring cards. は規則上の期待です。慶英会では独自4択30問、英文修正12問、オリジナル長文2題・内容一致8問、合計50問を用意しました。

結論｜would rather は好み、had better は強い助言、supposed to は予定・期待

文型の違いを見抜くには後ろの動詞を確認するだけでなく、誰が決めたことなのかを読むのが有効です。would rather stayは本人が滞在を好むこと、had better leaveは出発した方がよいという助言、be supposed to arrive at nineは9時到着という予定を表します。hadは形が過去形でも、had betterが過去の出来事を示すわけではありません。

英検2級の公式形式と本教材の位置付け

英検協会の2級試験内容では、Readingに短文空所17問、長文空所6問、内容一致8問、Writingに英文要約と意見英作文が各1題あります。好み・義務・予定の違いを正確に読むことは内容一致や英作文に役立ちますが、これらの構文が決まった頻度で出題されるわけではありません。本ページの50問は慶英会の独自教材です。

まず比較｜5種類の意味と語順

よくある誤解と英検2級Readingでの判断

「予定と実際」は別物です。The event was supposed to begin at ten, but it started at eleven. なら本来の開始は10時、実際の開始は11時です。I’d rather not attend. は欠席が決定した事実とは限りません。The teacher had better check the room. と言われただけで点検が済んだことにはなりません。この「発言と確定事実の区別」は英検2級の選択肢でも重要です。

よくある質問

had better は過去の意味ですか？

通常は現在・将来に対する強い助言を表し、過去形のhadだけで過去の出来事と判断しません。

would rather の後ろにtoは必要ですか？

基本形では不要です。I’d rather stay とI’d prefer to stay を区別します。

be supposed to は必ず予定どおり実施された意味ですか？

いいえ。予定や期待を述べる形であり、実施されたかは後続の情報で判断する必要があります。

この50問だけで英検2級の合格が判断できますか？
