Why did …? は理由、What does …? は行動や機能、Which statement best describes …?
originally、unfortunately、however、instead、therefore、for this reasonなどが出たら、その前と後で何が変わったかを整理します。
A Student Exchange Project: A Change in the Workshop
Subject: Our exchange project next month
Hi Rina,
Thank you for helping us plan the student exchange project. The visiting students will arrive on November 12, and our school would like them to learn about daily life in our town rather than just visit famous tourist sites.
We originally planned to take everyone to the local history museum on Friday morning. Unfortunately, the museum will be closed for repairs that day. Our teacher suggested replacing that visit with a workshop at the community center. A group of residents there teaches people how to repair small household items instead of throwing them away. Students will work in groups and learn how to fix simple things such as broken bags or toys. The workshop will be free, but we need to tell the organizers how many students are coming by Monday.
I know you wanted to include a visit to the market. We can still do that on Saturday afternoon after the students meet their host families. However, I think it would be better to let the visitors interview the shop owners in small groups instead of asking the owners to make long speeches. Several students told us that they are nervous about speaking English in front of a large audience. Small conversations would give everyone more chances to ask questions.
Could you send me the final list of participants by Sunday evening? I will use it to confirm the workshop reservation. Please also tell me if any students have food allergies, since the host families are preparing dinner on Saturday.
Best wishes,
Mai
問1 Why has the Friday morning plan been changed?
1. The students have already visited the history museum.
2. The community center has asked for more volunteers.
3. The history museum will not be open that day.
4. The host families want the students to visit the market instead.
問2 Why does Mai prefer small-group interviews at the market?
1. They will allow students to speak more and feel less nervous.
2. They will help shop owners finish their work earlier.
3. They will make it unnecessary to visit host families.
4. They will give teachers time to prepare long speeches.
問3 What does Mai ask Rina to send by Sunday evening?
1. A report about the museum repairs.
2. A list of items that need to be repaired.
3. A schedule for the teachers’ speeches.
4. The final number and names of participants.
Rain Gardens: A Small Solution for Heavy Rain
In many cities, heavy rain causes problems even when streets have modern drainage systems. Roads and parking areas are often covered with concrete, so rainwater cannot easily enter the ground. Instead, large amounts of water flow quickly into drains. During a strong storm, some drains may not be able to carry away the water fast enough, and nearby streets can become flooded.
One way to reduce this problem is to build a rain garden. A rain garden is a shallow area of land containing soil and plants. It is usually placed where water from a roof or a paved surface can flow into it. Unlike an ordinary garden, it is designed to hold rainwater for a short time while allowing the water to slowly enter the soil. The plants also help keep the soil in place.
Several neighborhoods have built small rain gardens near schools and public buildings. In one town, the local government first planned to replace a large section of pavement with a garden. However, residents were concerned that removing too much pavement would make the area difficult to use for community events. The project team therefore chose three smaller locations instead. After a year, measurements showed that less rainwater was reaching the drains during ordinary storms in those locations.
Rain gardens still have limitations. They need suitable soil, regular care, and enough space. They cannot stop every flood, especially during extremely heavy storms. For this reason, engineers often recommend using them together with improvements to existing drainage systems.
Another benefit is that rain gardens can become places for environmental education. Some schools ask students to record rainfall, observe plants, and compare how quickly water disappears from different surfaces. By studying these results, students can understand why the same amount of rain may cause different problems in different parts of a city. A small garden, therefore, can improve a neighborhood while also helping people learn about how water moves.
問4 What causes rainwater to collect quickly on many city streets?
1. Rain gardens cause water to flow onto roads.
2. Hard surfaces prevent much of the water from entering the ground.
3. Modern drains are designed to keep water on the surface.
4. Most city plants use too much water during a storm.
問5 What is one important function of a rain garden?
1. It makes the ground completely dry during storms.
2. It sends all rainwater directly into city drains.
3. It prevents plants from growing near paved areas.
4. It temporarily holds water and helps it enter the soil.
問6 Why did the project team choose three smaller sites?
1. Residents wanted to keep enough pavement for local activities.
2. Local schools had already built three large gardens.
3. The team discovered that small gardens never need care.
4. The government had been ordered to stop measuring rainfall.
問7 Which statement best describes a limitation of rain gardens?
1. They must always be built on school property.
2. They can only be used in cities without drains.
3. They may be insufficient during very severe storms.
4. They cannot contain plants that hold soil in place.
問8 What additional value can rain gardens provide for students?
1. They allow students to avoid studying the weather.
2. They offer chances to investigate rainfall and water movement.
3. They guarantee that all nearby roads will remain dry.
4. They replace the need to learn about public infrastructure.
