英検2級の食品表示・Eメール読解では、serving size(1食分)、per 100 mL(100mL当たり)、per package(容器全体)、contains(含む)とmay contain(含む可能性がある)を区別します。

A school nutrition club compared the labels on several breakfast products. One fictional cereal package contained 240 grams of cereal. Its nutrition table stated that one serving was 40 grams, so the complete package contained six servings if each was measured according to the label. For each 40-gram serving, the table showed 160 kilocalories of energy, 8 grams of total sugars and 3 grams of dietary fiber. The students reminded their classmates that the figures in the table described one serving, not the entire package. Someone eating two servings would consume 80 grams of cereal and, according to the table, 320 kilocalories and 16 grams of sugars. The whole 240-gram package would therefore contain six times the amounts shown for one serving: 960 kilocalories, 48 grams of sugars and 18 grams of dietary fiber. The club made these calculations only to practice interpreting labels; it did not recommend eating the complete package. The teacher pointed out that labels use specified serving sizes, whereas individuals may eat different quantities. A reported serving size should not automatically be treated as the exact amount every person eats. The fictional exercise was not designed to give personalized nutrition advice.

At a student science fair, visitors compared the sugar information on two fictional drinks. Drink A was sold in a 350-milliliter bottle. Its label showed 4 grams of sugar and 36 kilocalories per 100 milliliters. To calculate the amount in the entire bottle, students multiplied those figures by 3.5. Drink B came in a smaller 250-milliliter bottle. Its label showed 5 grams of sugar and 40 kilocalories per 100 milliliters. Drink B had a higher sugar concentration per 100 milliliters, but its smaller total volume meant that one full bottle contained 12.5 grams of sugar, compared with 14 grams in Drink A. Drink A’s full bottle contained 126 kilocalories, while Drink B’s full bottle contained 100 kilocalories. The students were asked to keep the two comparisons separate: concentration per 100 milliliters and amount per entire package answer different questions. A teacher also reminded the students that the values came from invented labels for a mathematics and reading exercise. Neither drink was being recommended for a particular person, and the comparison did not establish every nutritional difference between the products.

The school cafeteria introduced new English ingredient notices for an international exchange day. The notices listed foods used in each dish and included separate allergen information. The staff stressed that these fictional examples were for practicing how to read labels; students with food allergies should rely on current verified information and the cafeteria’s established safety procedures, not on an English classroom exercise. One noodle dish listed wheat and soy as ingredients. Its notice said “Contains wheat and soy.” A second line said “May contain peanuts” because the same preparation area was also used for products containing peanuts. The first statement identified ingredients in the recipe; the second warned about a possibility of unintended contact. “May contain” did not mean that peanuts were a planned ingredient in every serving, but it was not a guarantee that peanuts were absent either. A vegetable soup used no wheat in its listed recipe. However, the cafeteria had not verified whether every packaged seasoning was suitable for a student with a wheat allergy. Staff therefore refused to promise that the soup was safe for that person without further checks. Before the event, the cafeteria manager planned to obtain updated supplier information and review preparation methods. Students were told to distinguish what a notice confirmed, what remained uncertain, and what needed professional verification.

A student club created an imaginary nutrition label for a box of three snack bars. The label described the nutrients in one bar, not the entire box. Each bar contained 120 kilocalories, 4 grams of protein, 5 grams of fat, 7 grams of added sugars and 2 grams of dietary fiber. The students calculated that someone eating two bars would consume 240 kilocalories, 8 grams of protein and 10 grams of fat, according to the label. If all three bars were eaten, the totals would be 360 kilocalories, 12 grams of protein, 15 grams of fat, 21 grams of added sugars and 6 grams of fiber. A visitor mistakenly read the figure of 7 grams of added sugars as the amount in the whole box. The teacher explained that the label explicitly stated “per bar,” so the amount in the complete box was three times that figure. The students also discussed the difference between total sugars and added sugars. Added sugars form a category within total sugars, so readers should not automatically add those two numbers together as though they represented unrelated substances. The exercise aimed to improve reading and calculations, not to determine which snack was suitable for an individual’s health needs.
