Subject: Final Instructions for Saturday’s Community Science Day

Dear Presenters,

Thank you for registering for the Community Science Day at the Hillside Learning Center. The event opens to the public at 10:00 a.m. Presenting teams should arrive through the east entrance between 8:45 and 9:15 a.m. Staff will check their names, examine equipment, and explain the safety rules before the visitors arrive.

Because the main hall is being repaired, the exhibitions will take place in the ground-floor sports room instead. The opening time and program have not changed. Each team will be given a table and two chairs. However, participants must bring their own posters and any computers needed for digital presentations.

Any group requiring an electrical outlet must email our office by Wednesday at noon. We may be unable to arrange extra connections if the request arrives later. Devices that produce smoke or strong odors are not permitted. Please ask our staff for help if equipment stops working; students should not attempt to repair electrical devices.

The event ends at 3:00 p.m., followed by a short award ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Judges will consider how clearly students explain their research questions, methods, and results. They will not award extra marks simply because a group used expensive equipment. If anyone in your group needs step-free access, please let us know by Thursday evening.

Best regards,
Science Day Office

During summer, public parks can provide places where residents rest and enjoy outdoor activities. Trees offer shade, and some towns have considered planting more of them along shopping streets. However, choosing where to plant trees is complicated. Underground pipes, narrow sidewalks, maintenance costs, and the needs of people using wheelchairs must all be considered.

Students at a community college compared temperatures on two streets in Millford. One had more mature trees than the other. The first measurements suggested that the shaded street was cooler, but the students had taken readings at different times of day. Traffic volumes were also different. Their teacher explained that these conditions could influence temperatures, so the difference could not be attributed to the trees alone.

The students repeated the study using identical thermometers and taking readings at matching times. They also interviewed wheelchair users and parents with strollers. Some interviewees reported that uneven sidewalks around tree roots made moving difficult. The students concluded that a good planting plan needed to consider both shade and accessible paths.

Before planting more trees, the town decided to test a smaller area and compare temperatures, costs, and users’ experiences over several seasons. Officials also planned to provide more drinking-water stations and shaded resting places. They emphasized that trees may reduce heat, but no single measure can solve every problem connected with hot weather.

問27 What is one possible benefit of street trees?

  1. Removing all traffic from town centers
  2. Providing shade for pedestrians
  3. Replacing underground pipes
  4. Eliminating the need for any public water supply

正答B(Providing shade for pedestrians)。

28 Why was the students’ first comparison unreliable?

  1. Readings were taken at different times and traffic conditions varied
  2. Both streets had the same number of trees
  3. The thermometers had all been broken
  4. No temperatures were recorded

A(Readings were taken at different times and traffic conditions varied)。different times of day / Traffic volumes were also different。

問29 What issue was raised by some people using wheelchairs or strollers?

  1. No one had permission to take photographs
  2. There were too many books in the parks
  3. Bus tickets were difficult to purchase
  4. Uneven paths around tree roots made movement difficult

正答D(Uneven paths around tree roots made movement difficult)。uneven sidewalks around tree roots made moving difficult。

問30 What will the town do before planting trees in more places?

  1. Close all shopping streets
  2. Test a smaller area and review several kinds of results
  3. End every survey
  4. Buy a new bus system immediately

B(Test a smaller area and review several kinds of results)。test a smaller area / compare temperatures, costs, and users’ experiences。

問31 Which statement best summarizes the passage?

  1. Trees alone can solve all problems of extreme heat
  2. Every street should immediately receive the same number of trees
  3. Tree planting may help, but its practical effects and accessibility should be assessed
  4. People should stop using public parks in summer

C(Tree planting may help, but its practical effects and accessibility should be assessed)。

Writing Part 1|

Some towns allow residents to borrow basic sports equipment from public libraries. Families can use balls, badminton rackets, and other items for short periods. Supporters say these services help children try activities without asking parents to buy expensive equipment. They may also give people opportunities to discover new interests.

However, running equipment-lending services presents challenges. Some items can be damaged or lost, and libraries need storage space and staff time to check them. Popular items may not be available when many families want them at the same time.

To deal with these problems, libraries can require advance reservations, explain safety rules, and inspect equipment after each loan. Trained volunteers may help manage busy periods. These steps can improve the service, but libraries still need to consider maintenance costs and find out whether the programs actually encourage residents to be more active.

Some libraries lend sports equipment so families can try activities without buying costly items. However, damage, loss, limited storage, and high demand make these services difficult to manage. Reservations, safety instructions, inspections, and volunteers can help, although libraries must still assess maintenance costs and whether participation in physical activities increases.

Writing Part 2|

TOPIC: Do you think schools should give students more opportunities to learn practical repair skills?

POINTS: Cost / Environment / Safety

I think schools should give students more opportunities to learn practical repair skills. First, students can save money by fixing simple problems rather than replacing items. For example, they could learn how to sew a loose button. Second, repairing objects may help students understand the importance of reducing waste. However, safety must be considered carefully, especially when electrical equipment is involved. Schools could begin with easy tasks during existing lessons and avoid dangerous repairs. These activities would teach useful skills without requiring a completely new subject or expensive equipment.
