Subject: Update to Saturday’s River Trail Survey

Dear Club Leaders,

Thank you for registering for Saturday’s river trail survey. Our team will count birds and record places where visitors leave litter. As announced last month, volunteers were originally supposed to meet at the south entrance at 9:00 a.m. However, construction workers will be repairing the footbridge near that entrance. The meeting point has therefore been moved to the north parking area. The starting time is still 9:00 a.m.

Please remind everyone to bring a reusable water bottle and a hat. We will provide gloves and recording sheets. Participants should not bring their own tools because some types could damage plants near the path. Also, anyone under the age of fifteen must attend with an adult.

We expect to finish the survey at noon. If heavy rain is forecast by 6:00 p.m. on Friday, we will cancel the outdoor activity and hold a short online training session instead. We will post the final decision on the club website on Friday evening; we will not send individual emails. If the outdoor survey takes place, each club may submit its observations by Monday morning.

Best regards,
Mina Tanaka
Volunteer Coordinator

  1. On the club website on Friday evening.
  2. In individual emails on Saturday morning.
  3. At the south entrance on Friday.
  4. On the recording sheets after the survey.

Many people throw away small household items when they stop working, even though replacing a broken part might be enough to make them useful again. To reduce unnecessary waste, a community center in Westport began holding a “repair afternoon” twice a month. Residents could bring items such as lamps, backpacks, and clothes. Trained volunteers inspected them and explained what could safely be fixed.

The organizers wanted the event to be more than a free repair service. When a problem was simple, volunteers demonstrated how to sew a loose button or replace a damaged cable under safe conditions. They believed that people who understood basic repairs would be less likely to throw away useful things in the future. However, volunteers did not accept leaking batteries or electrical devices that were unsafe to open. For these items, they advised residents to contact qualified professionals.

After four months, the center asked visitors to complete a short questionnaire. About seventy percent of those who responded said they would try a simple repair before buying a new item. The organizers were pleased but careful about the result. The questionnaire had been given only to people who attended the event, and not everyone completed it. Therefore, it could not show whether the attitudes of all Westport residents had changed.

The program also faced practical difficulties. Some volunteers were available only on weekends, while others had work commitments. The center therefore reduced the number of events during examination periods at nearby colleges. The town council has agreed to fund a small trial in another neighborhood next year. Before deciding whether to expand the program further, the organizers plan to compare attendance and collect follow-up information about whether repaired items are still being used.

問27 What is one main goal of the repair afternoons?

  1. To teach residents basic repairs and reduce waste.
  2. To sell new electrical devices at lower prices.
  3. To replace professional repair businesses.
  4. To collect broken items for a museum.

A:To teach residents basic repairs and reduce waste.。第1・2段落に waste reduction と demonstrate how to repair の二目的がある。

28 Why do volunteers sometimes show visitors how to repair an item?

  1. To make each event finish earlier.
  2. To encourage them to repair things in the future.
  3. To prepare them for a paid examination.
  4. To persuade them to purchase more tools.

B:To encourage them to repair things in the future.。less likely to throw away useful things in the future

29 Which item would the volunteers refuse to repair at the event?

  1. A backpack with a damaged strap.
  2. A shirt with a missing button.
  3. A device with a leaking battery.
  4. A lamp with a loose shade.

C:A device with a leaking battery.。did not accept leaking batteries or electrical devices unsafe to open

30 Why could the questionnaire not describe the views of all Westport residents?

  1. It was conducted before the events started.
  2. It asked only about the prices of new items.
  3. Every resident was required to answer it.
  4. It was offered only to visitors, and some did not respond.

D:It was offered only to visitors, and some did not respond.。

31 What will organizers do before considering a larger expansion?

  1. Test the program elsewhere and collect follow-up data.
  2. Stop the original events permanently.
  3. Ask visitors to buy new tools from the center.
  4. Replace every volunteer with paid staff.

A:Test the program elsewhere and collect follow-up data.。another neighborhood で試行し attendance と still being used を確認するとある。

After-school clubs help many students develop interests that regular classes cannot cover. However, students who live far from school sometimes have to leave activities early because the last bus departs before clubs finish. To solve this problem, several schools have introduced a late bus that leaves about one hour after regular classes end. This gives more students a chance to join clubs and receive academic support.

Running an extra bus costs money, and not every neighborhood has enough passengers to fill one. Some schools have also found that students are unsure where the bus stops or when it will arrive. As a result, a useful service can be underused even when students need transportation.

To address these difficulties, schools have tried sharing buses with nearby schools and surveying students before choosing routes. They also publish clear schedules and review passenger numbers each term. These steps may make the service more efficient, but schools still need to consider their budgets.

Some schools offer late buses so that students who live far away can join after-school activities. However, extra services are costly, and unclear schedules or low passenger numbers may limit their usefulness. Schools can share buses, survey students, and review routes, although they must still consider their budgets.

TOPIC: Do you think local communities should provide more free study spaces for teenagers?

POINTS: Cost / Learning environment / Community support

I think local communities should provide more free study spaces for teenagers. First, not every student has a quiet place to work at home. A public study room would help them concentrate without requiring families to pay for a private service. Second, shared spaces could make learning support easier to access. For example, libraries could offer occasional homework sessions with trained volunteers. Of course, these rooms would require staff and maintenance costs. However, communities could begin with existing buildings and limited opening hours. This would make the project more affordable while giving teenagers a useful place to study.
