A town has started a project to test small rainwater tanks at several public buildings. The tanks collect water from roofs, which may then be used for watering plants. Supporters believe this could reduce the use of drinking water for gardening. However, staff must check the tanks regularly and make sure stored water is not used for drinking unless it has been treated properly. The trial does not claim that collected rainwater is automatically safe for every purpose.

The town has also installed light-colored covers on part of one building’s roof. The covers are designed to reflect sunlight and may help keep the surface cooler. During several sunny afternoons, the covered area was cooler than nearby uncovered surfaces. Still, the town cannot conclude that every building would save electricity, because total energy use has not been measured.

Officials plan to review both trials after six months. They will examine maintenance expenses, the amount of water used for gardening, and whether temperatures remain lower under different weather conditions. The town hopes to expand the measures if the evidence supports doing so, but a permanent program has not yet been approved.

問28|What is one intended use of the collected rainwater?

  1. Watering plants
  2. Providing untreated drinking water to every visitor
  3. Cleaning medical tools without inspection
  4. Supplying school lunch drinks

問29|What warning is given about stored rainwater?

  1. All rainwater is automatically safe
  2. It should not be treated as drinking water without proper treatment
  3. Every tank must be removed after one day
  4. Stored water cannot ever be used for plants

問30|What did the light-colored roof covers demonstrate during the trial?

  1. All buildings saved energy
  2. The town’s electricity bills fell by half
  3. A covered area had a lower surface temperature
  4. Every roof was replaced

問31|What is the current status of permanent expansion?

  1. It has been fully approved
  2. All trials have ended
  3. Maintenance costs are irrelevant
  4. It has not yet been approved

28:A(Watering plants)。may be used for watering plants。

問29:B(It should not be treated as drinking water without proper treatment)。not for drinking unless properly treated。

問30:C(A covered area had a lower surface temperature)。surface measurements only。

問31:D(It has not yet been approved)。permanent program not approved。

Some towns have started lending small gardening tools to residents through local community centers. Supporters say these programs could make gardening easier for people who do not want to buy equipment that they may use only occasionally. Residents may try growing vegetables or caring for plants without spending much money on tools.

However, shared gardening equipment can be difficult to manage. Staff need to inspect items for damage and explain how to use them safely. Popular tools may not be available when many people request them. Centers may also face storage expenses and the cost of replacing broken equipment.

Several towns are running limited trials. Organizers record how often tools are borrowed and ask residents about their experiences. They will review maintenance costs before deciding whether to expand the collections. The towns have not yet measured whether the lending programs lead to a long-term increase in gardening activities.

Community centers are testing gardening-tool lending programs that let residents try gardening without purchasing equipment. The programs may lower costs, but safety checks, limited supplies, storage, and repairs create challenges. Organizers are gathering loan data and feedback before expanding, while long-term effects on people’s gardening habits remain unmeasured.

TOPIC: Do you think public libraries should offer more free workshops for teenagers?

I think public libraries should offer more free workshops for teenagers. First, workshops could help students learn practical skills that they do not always practice in class, such as presenting ideas or checking online information. Second, free activities may give families more educational opportunities without extra costs. Of course, libraries need staff, suitable rooms, and clear safety rules. However, they could begin with a few sessions and ask participants for feedback before expanding. This would help them use their resources carefully. For these reasons, I support providing more workshops for teenagers at public libraries.
