Reading Part 2|

1|Testing Late Library Hours

Public libraries are important places for research and quiet study. Some residents would like their libraries to remain open after normal working hours. However, staying open longer requires staff, lighting, and security, so many libraries begin with a short trial.

One library stayed open until nine on four Fridays. The first Friday attracted a large crowd because a local author gave a talk. The other evenings were much quieter. (18), the library examined repeat visits instead of assuming that the opening-night crowd reflected normal demand.

Visitors also expressed different needs. Students wanted quiet desks, while other residents wanted help with computers. (19), the staff arranged study sessions on some Fridays and computer support on others. This allowed each activity to have appropriate supervision.

After the trial, the managers compared attendance with the cost of wages and electricity. They planned to check results across another month (20) making a permanent change.

長文2|Understanding Claims About Reusable Products

Reusable bottles and food containers are often advertised as ways to reduce waste. These products may replace disposable packaging, but their environmental benefits depend on how frequently they are used and how they are cleaned.

Producing a reusable container may require more material than producing one disposable item. Washing the container also uses water and energy. (21), buyers should consider its expected lifetime and cleaning needs instead of assuming that all reusable products are automatically better.

Companies sometimes publish estimates of environmental savings. However, the figures may use different assumptions, such as how many times a container is reused. (22), a product that appears beneficial under one assumption might be less useful if customers rarely return it.

Teachers encourage students to examine the original information behind advertising claims. Students should compare the assumptions and results (23) accepting a broad promise that lacks evidence.

長文1|E-mail|International Food Fair

To: Student Volunteers

From: Community Exchange Office

Subject: Changes to the February 13 food fair

Thank you for helping at our food fair on Saturday, February 13. The event opens to visitors at 11:00 a.m. We originally planned to use the outdoor market, but repairs to the roof over the stalls are unfinished. The fair will therefore take place in the community hall. The date and opening time are unchanged.

Volunteers should arrive by 10:00 to receive name cards and safety instructions. Tables and drinking water are provided. Teams requiring special electrical equipment must apply by February 5. An automatic email confirms receipt only. A separate approval will be sent after the equipment has been checked.

Please display clear ingredient labels so that visitors with food allergies can make informed decisions. A dish’s name does not necessarily show every ingredient. Only trained food handlers may prepare meals, while other volunteers may help with signs and directions.

If you need to change your assigned shift, tell us by February 8. Later requests may be refused because safety staff and printed programs must be arranged in advance. The final schedule will be emailed on February 10.

長文2|Article|Making Town Parks Easier to Use

Public parks provide spaces for exercise, relaxation, and meeting friends. However, a park that looks pleasant in photographs may be difficult for some people to use. Narrow paths, stairs, and unclear signs can create obstacles for visitors using wheelchairs or pushchairs.

One town asked residents to test two routes through a park. The first was shorter but had several steps near a bridge. The second route was slightly longer and had a wider surface. People using mobility aids said the longer path was easier to follow. The town therefore decided to improve its signs and identify the longer route as an accessible path.

Shade was another concern. In summer, some residents needed cool places to rest. Officials tested temporary covers and recorded temperatures at different times. The results varied with sunlight and surrounding buildings, so one afternoon’s measurement could not demonstrate a permanent cooling effect.

Maintenance also mattered. Paths could become slippery after rain, and damaged benches needed repairs. Staff recorded costs and kept temporary-closure information current. Printed maps remained available for visitors who did not use smartphones.

The town concluded that improvements should be measured through safe access, actual use, upkeep costs, and the experience of different residents. The number of new benches alone could not show whether the park had become easier for everyone to use.

問28

Why was the longer park route preferred?

  1. It had more stairs.
  2. It was wider and easier for people using mobility aids.
  3. It led to a shopping center.
  4. It had no signs.

問29

What did the shade trial suggest?

  1. Temperatures never change.
  2. All visitors prefer the same bench.
  3. Results depend on time and surrounding conditions.
  4. The covers require no maintenance.

C:Results depend on time and surrounding conditions.。sunlight, buildings, time affect temperature readings。

Why did the town keep printed maps?

  1. Some visitors did not use smartphones.
  2. Online maps could never be updated.
  3. Printed maps are always free.
  4. All park visitors are children.

A:Some visitors did not use smartphones.。printed maps for visitors without smartphones。

How should improvements be judged?

  1. By the number of benches only.
  2. By opening-day attendance.
  3. By photographs of the park.
  4. By safe access, use, costs, and diverse experiences.

D:By safe access, use, costs, and diverse experiences.。final conclusion enumerates access/use/costs/experiences。

Writing Part 4|

Some schools provide tablets for classroom activities and homework. The devices give students access to digital dictionaries, educational videos, and materials that teachers can update quickly. They may also help teachers provide feedback when students work outside school.

However, tablets are expensive to buy and maintain. Screens may break, batteries can fail, and accounts need privacy protection. Some students have unreliable internet connections at home, making online assignments difficult even when they have a device.

Schools can offer technical support, lend replacement tablets, and provide downloadable lessons for offline use. They also teach safe account use and review whether the devices improve learning before purchasing more equipment.

School tablets can provide updated learning materials and quicker feedback. However, devices are costly to maintain, can break, and may create privacy or internet-access problems. Schools can offer technical support, replacement devices, offline materials, and lessons in safe account use while evaluating educational results before buying more equipment.

Writing Part 5|

TOPIC:Do you think schools should give students more opportunities to study in local museums and libraries?

I think schools should offer more opportunities to learn in local museums and libraries. First, students can connect classroom topics with real materials. For example, seeing historical objects can make a social studies lesson more memorable. Second, these places can encourage independent learning. Students can compare sources, ask questions, and develop research skills outside ordinary lessons. However, schools should consider travel costs, accessibility, and the needs of students who cannot attend in person. Teachers can prepare alternative activities and check what students actually learn. With careful planning, community visits can strengthen school education.
