Global Studies

Dear Nao,

Our community library has invited several international visitors to an English book discussion next month. Each student can choose a short story and explain why its characters make particular decisions. I wanted to recommend a long mystery novel, but the librarian suggested using shorter books first so that everyone could prepare. I have now chosen a story about a young photographer who learns to listen to other people’s opinions.

The discussion was originally going to take place on Thursday evening. However, the visitors will be traveling that day, so the meeting has been moved to Saturday morning. We will start with pairs and then form groups of four. The librarian will give us possible questions in advance, but we should create one question of our own. If you would like to borrow a book before the meeting, please contact the library by Tuesday. Joining is free, and you do not have to bring a dictionary.

Would you like to come with me? I hope we can compare our opinions after the discussion.

Best,

Mika

  1. What is the main purpose of Mika’s email?
  2. Why did Mika change her choice of book?
  3. What is the story Mika finally chose about?
  4. Why was the meeting moved from Thursday?
  5. What is the revised meeting day and time of day?
  6. How will participants be grouped at first?
  7. What must every student prepare independently?
  8. What is the deadline for contacting the library to borrow a book?
  9. Must students bring a dictionary or pay to join?
  10. What would be a correct paraphrase of ‘I hope we can compare our opinions’?

Hello team,

Thank you for helping prepare the multilingual exhibition guide for our town museum. We have agreed that each group will explain one exhibit in simple English. The guide should help visitors understand the purpose of each object rather than list every difficult historical fact. Last week, some students copied long descriptions from books, but several younger readers said they could not follow the explanations. We will therefore write shorter sentences and check their meaning carefully.

Here is our updated plan. Rina will research the history of the objects, Haru will draft the English explanations, and Ken will check whether the examples are easy to understand. I will coordinate the final review. Originally, we planned to finish on Monday, but the museum staff need two more days to confirm the facts. We will now send our draft on Wednesday. Please do not publish photographs of visitors or include their names in the guide. We will only use approved pictures of the exhibits.

Before sending your section, ask someone from another group to read it without additional explanations. This will show us whether visitors can understand it independently.

Thanks,

Sora

  1. Who is the intended audience for this email?
  2. Why are the students changing long descriptions into shorter sentences?
  3. What should the guide emphasize about each object?
  4. Which team member is responsible for researching history?
  5. Who will check whether the examples are understandable?
  6. What role does Haru have?
  7. Why was the deadline extended?
  8. What is the new day for sending the draft?
  9. What kinds of images may the team use?
  10. Why should another group read the draft without help?

Keeping observation records can help students connect science with language learning. In one proposed activity, students would watch plants growing in two different locations. They would write down the date, amount of water, and changes in height. Later, they would explain the results in short English sentences for students from another country. This would give them a reason to use accurate numbers and clear words rather than memorizing expressions without context.

However, the activity would only be useful if measurements could be compared fairly. If one group measured plants in the morning and the other measured them in the evening, differences in temperature or light could influence the findings. Students should therefore agree on a common measurement time. They should also avoid claiming that sunlight was the only cause of a change unless they had checked other possible factors.

The teachers are considering a small trial. They plan to ask students whether writing explanations in English helps them notice information that was missing from their notes. They will not decide to expand the activity until they have reviewed both the scientific measurements and the students’ feedback.

  1. What is the main purpose of the proposed activity?
  2. Which three kinds of information would students record?
  3. Who would read the English explanations?
  4. Why might recording time affect fair comparisons?
  5. What common rule should groups adopt?
  6. Can students conclude that sunlight alone caused the results?
  7. What does ‘rather than memorizing expressions without context’ suggest?
  8. What will teachers ask students to evaluate?
  9. Has the activity already been expanded to many classes?
  10. What must be reviewed before any expansion decision?

When visitors read an exhibition guide, they often want to understand an object quickly. Some museums are therefore experimenting with short explanations in several languages. A simple description could state what an object was used for, while a longer optional section would give historical details. Supporters say this design would help visitors with different levels of language experience. It could also make the museum more welcoming to families who have little time.

Still, shorter text does not automatically mean better information. If writers remove important conditions or change uncertain historical claims into definite facts, the guide may become misleading. A statement such as ‘People may have used this tool for farming’ should not be changed into ‘Everyone used this tool for farming.’ The second statement is stronger and may not be supported by evidence.

A museum planning this system has suggested testing several explanations with different groups of visitors. Staff would ask what each visitor understood and which details were confusing. They would then revise the descriptions before expanding the guide. The results have not yet been collected, so the museum cannot claim that the new system is more effective.

  1. What is the goal of offering short explanations in several languages?
  2. What information belongs in the optional longer section?
  3. Why might short explanations help families?
  4. What warning does the second paragraph give?
  5. What is wrong with changing ‘may have used’ to ‘everyone used’?
  6. What aspect of language learning does this example illustrate?
  7. How would the museum test its explanations?
  8. What will staff do after collecting comments?
  9. Has the museum already proven its system is more effective?
  10. What would be a fair conclusion about the new guide?

  1. Members of a team preparing a museum guide.
  2. Younger readers could not understand the earlier explanations.

  10. To test whether visitors can understand it independently.

  1. To connect scientific observations with explaining results in English.
  2. Dates, water amounts, and changes in plant height.
  3. Students from another country.
  4. Light and temperature may differ by time of day.
  5. Measure the plants at an agreed time.
  6. No, not without checking other possible causes.
  7. Students should use English to communicate actual observations.
  8. Whether English explanations reveal missing information in their notes.
  9. No. Only a small trial is being considered.
  10. Both measurements and student feedback.

  1. To help different visitors understand exhibits quickly.
  2. Historical details.
  3. Some families have limited time.
  4. Shorter explanations can mislead if important conditions are removed.
  5. It changes an uncertain possibility into an unsupported certainty.
  6. Preserving the strength and uncertainty of statements.
  7. Ask different visitors what they understood and found confusing.
  8. Revise the descriptions.
  9. No. The results have not been collected yet.
  10. It may be helpful, but it needs testing before expansion.
