②因果:because・so・as a resultを区別。③対比:however・but・insteadを確認。 ⑤結論の強さ:may・might・suggestsとalways・provesの違いを認識。

Subject: Updated Plan for the Saturday Exchange Workshop
Dear Student Volunteers,
Thank you for helping with our exchange workshop this Saturday. We expect twenty-four visiting students, and they will work with local students in groups of six.
The workshop was originally scheduled to begin at 9:00 in Room 105. However, the visitors’ bus will arrive later than planned, so the session will start at 9:45. We have also moved the event to the library hall because the original room does not have enough space. Volunteers should arrive by 9:20 to arrange tables and check materials.
In the morning, each group will prepare a short introduction to a place in their hometown. Students may use photographs, but they must explain in their own words rather than read every sentence from a screen. Each presentation should last about three minutes.
After lunch, students will exchange questions about school life. The organizers will provide paper, markers, and lunch. Please bring a water bottle and a notebook.
The workshop will end at 3:30, thirty minutes later than first announced. Students who cannot attend must contact us by Thursday evening. If you need a vegetarian meal, please tell us by Wednesday so that we can prepare enough food.
We look forward to meeting you.

A group of students wanted to know if reading short English stories every day could help them understand longer passages. They invited forty students to read for fifteen minutes each evening over four weeks. The students could choose books that were easy enough to enjoy, and they wrote a one-sentence note after each reading session.
Before and after the project, everyone took the same short reading task. Twenty-six students scored higher at the end, nine had nearly the same scores, and five scored lower. The students also completed a survey about their confidence. Thirty said they felt more comfortable reading English, while ten reported no change.
At first, the organizers wanted to conclude that daily reading always improves English scores. Their teacher asked them to reconsider. There was no comparison group of students who followed a different routine. Regular school lessons, help from family members, and extra practice could also affect performance.
The organizers then reviewed the reading notes. Some students had chosen short stories about sports, while others preferred science or travel. The group noticed that students often enjoyed books connected to their interests, but this observation did not establish which topics caused the greatest improvement.
For the next study, the students plan to compare two reading schedules and record how much additional English practice participants do outside the study. They hope to make more careful conclusions that other students can use.
Q31. How many students joined the study? A. Twenty-six / B. Thirty / C. Forty / D. Fifty
Q32. How long were students asked to read each evening? A. Fifteen minutes / B. Five minutes / C. Thirty minutes / D. One hour
Q33. How long did the study last? A. Two weeks / B. Three weeks / C. Five weeks / D. Four weeks
Q34. What did students write after each reading session? A. A full essay / B. A one-sentence note / C. A letter to a teacher / D. An English test
Q35. How many students scored higher at the end? A. Nine / B. Five / C. Twenty-six / D. Thirty
Q36. How many students scored lower? A. Five / B. Nine / C. Ten / D. Fourteen
Q37. How many students reported more confidence? A. Twenty-six / B. Forty / C. Ten / D. Thirty
Q38. Why did the teacher question the first conclusion? A. The books were all too difficult / B. There was no comparison group / C. No one read any books / D. The reading task was never given
Q39. What did the organizers notice about book choices? A. Everyone chose the same topic / B. No student liked science / C. Students often enjoyed interest-related books / D. Sports books were always best
Q40. What will the next study compare? A. Different reading schedules and extra practice / B. Only the cost of books / C. The number of classrooms / D. The colors of book covers
