A junior high school library opened twenty minutes earlier this month. Before the change, students often arrived before the doors opened and waited outside. The library staff asked students what they needed. Many wanted a quiet place to read before class. After the opening time changed, more students came in the morning. However, the staff has not checked whether the new schedule improved reading skills. It plans to compare borrowing records after three months.

1.What change did the library make?

One class wanted to reduce food waste at lunchtime. Students weighed the leftover rice for five school days. They found that more rice was left on days with a large serving size. The class decided to offer smaller first portions while allowing students to ask for more. The following week, the amount of leftover rice decreased. The students were pleased, but they noted that the weather and menu were different that week. They planned to continue measuring before making a final report.

7.What did the students measure?

9.What new serving plan did they try?

10.Why could the students not make a firm conclusion yet?

Haruka could recognize English words in her textbook, but she often misspelled them on tests. She tried a different method for two weeks. First, she read a short example sentence. Then she covered it and wrote the sentence from memory. The next day, she checked the same sentence again without looking. She made fewer spelling mistakes by the end of the two weeks. Her teacher advised her to try the method with unfamiliar sentences before deciding how much she had improved.

13.What was Haruka’s original problem?

14.What did she do after reading a sentence?

15.When did she check it again?

16.What improvement did she notice?

17.Why did the teacher suggest unfamiliar sentences?

A community science event was first planned for Saturday afternoon. However, heavy rain was expected, so the organizers moved the event to Sunday morning. They sent an email to registered families on Thursday and updated the event website. Some families read only the old printed flyer and arrived at the wrong time. After the event, the organizers decided that future flyers should include a QR code leading to the latest schedule. They also promised to use clearer email subject lines.

19.When was the event originally planned?

20.When was the event moved to?

21.How were registered families informed?

22.Why did some families arrive at the wrong time?

23.What will future flyers include?

A student team asked sixty classmates how they came to school. Thirty walked, twenty traveled by bus, and ten used bicycles. The team said that walking was the most common method among the sixty students surveyed. Another student asked whether the same result would appear in every grade. The team answered that it did not know because only two classes had been surveyed. It decided to collect information from more classes before presenting a school-wide conclusion.

25.How many students answered the survey?

26.Which method was the most common?

27.How many students used the bus?

28.How many classes were surveyed?

29.Why could the team not generalize to every grade?

During an online exchange, students from two countries shared ideas about saving water. At first, both groups thought that shorter showers were the best solution. Later, one group explained that repairing leaking taps could also save water. The students compared their ideas but did not calculate which action would save the most. They agreed to measure water use at home for one week and discuss the results in their next meeting. The project helped them see that different answers may require different evidence.

31.What topic did the students discuss?

32.What was the first proposed solution?

33.What second solution did one group suggest?

34.Did they calculate which action saved the most water?

35.What will they measure for one week?
