独自Read|Paragraph 1

The art club at Green Harbor School held a photography contest about everyday life in the town. Eighteen photographs were submitted before the deadline. The club wanted the final judging to be fair and easy for participants to understand. A preliminary committee chose three finalists, labeled A, B, and C, without displaying the students’ names beside their pictures. Two teachers would then score these three works independently. The final rubric had three categories: composition, clarity of message, and accurate description of what the photograph showed. Each category could receive from zero to five points, so the highest possible score from one judge was fifteen. The teachers were instructed to record their own scores before discussing the results. The organizer reminded everyone that selecting a finalist was not the same as awarding the final prize.

独自Read|Paragraph 2

The first teacher gave finalist A four points for composition, four for message, and five for accurate description. Its total was thirteen. She gave B five, three, and four points, making twelve, and C three, five, and four, also making twelve. The second teacher gave A five, four, and four, again totaling thirteen. She gave B four, four, and five, making thirteen, and C three, five, and three, making eleven. When the organizer added the two judges’ totals, A had twenty-six, B had twenty-five, and C had twenty-three. A therefore had the highest combined score among the three finalists. One student reported that A had received the highest score in every category from both teachers. The teacher corrected this statement. The total was highest, but some individual scores were equal or lower.

独自Read|Paragraph 3

The club had removed student names from the finalist labels, but the teacher explained that this did not guarantee perfect anonymity. A familiar building or a photograph already shown in class might allow someone to guess its creator. The judges therefore had to use the written rubric instead of personal impressions of the artist. After scoring, one member wanted to adjust the category weights so that message clarity would count twice. The organizer rejected this change because the scoring rules had been announced before judging began. Changing them afterward would make the results difficult to compare. The class could propose a different rubric for next year’s contest, but it could not describe that future idea as the scoring method already used. The current results remained based on three equally weighted categories.

独自Read|Paragraph 4

The next question concerned public display. Finalist B showed a public street, but a child’s face was clearly visible near the center. The teacher asked whether the club had permission to publish an identifiable image of the child on the school website. It had not obtained such permission. A student argued that reaching the final round meant the photograph could automatically be published. The organizer disagreed: permission for judging was not necessarily permission for public distribution. The club contacted the photographer and discussed whether a version without identifiable faces could be prepared. Until this question was resolved, B could remain in the internal judging record but would not be placed online. The scores were not changed because of the missing permission; the display decision and the judging results were handled separately.

独自Read|Paragraph 5

At the final meeting, the teachers confirmed A as the highest-scoring finalist and explained the results to the participants. The school prepared a short announcement naming the three finalists and describing the rubric, while respecting the publication choices of the students involved. A could be displayed after the photographer’s permission had been checked. B remained under review for public display, and C’s photographer chose to share only a written description. The club did not claim that a photograph with the highest score was automatically the safest or most suitable image to publish. It also did not describe all eighteen entries as if the two judges had scored every one of them in the final round. The teacher praised the class for keeping preliminary selection, independent scoring, a winner’s result, and publication permission as separate steps in one honest report.

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 2

Paragraph 3

Paragraph 4

Paragraph 5
