nothing butは「〜だけ」、anything butは「決して〜でない」、all butは「ほとんど〜」となる場合があります。ただしall but oneは「一つを除く全部」という意味です。似た外見でも意味が大きく異なるため、否定・数量・文脈を必ずセットで判断します。Stage3から高校英語へ進む発展練習です。

最初に覚える4つの意味・文型

1. nothing but＋名詞＝only：The room contained nothing but chairs. は椅子だけ。
2. anything but＋形容詞・名詞句＝far from：The answer was anything but simple. は決して単純ではない。
3. all but＋形容詞・過去分詞は「ほとんど」：The project was all but complete.＝ほぼ完了。
4. all but＋人数・物の範囲では「〜を除く全部」：All but one student agreed.＝1人を除き全員賛成。文法機能と意味を分ける。

The restoration club received a box of old photographs. At first, its members thought that the collection would be easy to organize, but the work was anything but simple. Many photographs had no dates, and some had been damaged by water. The box contained nothing but photographs and a short handwritten note. After three days, the students had all but completed the list of titles, but they still needed to identify several places. All but two of the photographs were clear enough to scan. The teacher warned the students not to claim that the collection was complete: nearly finished was not the same as fully checked.
