Read|Paragraph 1

At Lake Park School, a science class prepared an evening exhibition and planned to compare the electricity used by three classroom lamps. The lamps were called A, B, and C. According to their labels, A used twenty watts of power, B used forty watts, and C used ten watts while operating. The organizer planned to use A for three hours, B for two hours, and C for four hours. The teacher asked the students to distinguish watts from watt-hours. Watts described the rate at which a device used energy, while watt-hours described an amount of energy over time. The class would estimate energy by multiplying power in watts by hours of operation. The values belonged to a simplified educational example rather than a certified measurement of any particular commercial lamp. No comparison of how bright the lamps looked had been conducted at this stage.

Read|Paragraph 2

Before the event, the students calculated the energy required if every lamp operated for its full planned time. Lamp A would use sixty watt-hours, since twenty watts multiplied by three hours equaled sixty. B would use eighty watt-hours, and C would use forty watt-hours. The total planned energy was therefore one hundred and eighty watt-hours. A student said that lamp B had the greatest energy use simply because it had the highest power rating. The teacher asked him to consider the operating times as well. In this particular plan B did indeed have the highest total, but power and duration both contributed to the calculation. A different schedule could change which lamp used the most energy. The club wrote the planned times and calculated values in separate columns instead of giving only a ranking.

Read|Paragraph 3

During the exhibition, A operated for its planned three hours, and C operated for four hours. However, the organizer switched off B after only one hour because the display using it had finished early. The students checked the record and calculated B’s actual use as forty watt-hours, not eighty. A still used sixty and C still used forty. The actual total was therefore one hundred and forty watt-hours. The difference between the plan and the actual total was forty watt-hours, all of it caused by the shorter use of B in the classroom scenario. A visitor argued that the class had made a calculation error before the event. The teacher explained that the planned calculation could be correct as a forecast even if the schedule later changed. A planned amount and an observed amount were different kinds of information.

A15. 40Wh。

Read|Paragraph 4

For a simple cost illustration, the teacher gave the class a fictional rate of thirty yen per kilowatt-hour. One kilowatt-hour equals one thousand watt-hours, so the actual total of one hundred and forty watt-hours was zero point one four kilowatt-hours. Multiplying that amount by thirty gave four point two yen. The teacher explained that this was only an arithmetic example using the stated rate. Real electricity bills could include other charges, taxes, and different pricing conditions. The class also had not measured the actual brightness or suitability of the three lamps. A lower wattage did not by itself prove that a lamp would be suitable for every activity. The students kept the cost illustration separate from conclusions about product quality or real electricity contracts.

Read|Paragraph 5

In the final report, the students prepared two tables. The first showed the planned operating time and energy for each lamp, while the second showed the actual operating time and calculated energy. They described how the early shutdown of B explained the difference between one hundred and eighty planned watt-hours and one hundred and forty actual watt-hours. They did not claim to have proved which lamp was best for reading or which electricity provider offered the lowest price. The report also noted that the labels gave simplified constant power values and that the activity had not directly measured real power changes during operation. The teacher praised the distinction between a rate, a quantity, a forecast, and an observation. Clear English explanation, she said, begins by identifying the question each number can answer.

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 2

Paragraph 3

Paragraph 4

Paragraph 5
