Read|Paragraph 1

At Silverwood School, a science club prepared a classroom investigation using equal portions of ice. The teacher gave the students three identical containers and one hundred grams of ice for each. The containers were labeled A, B, and C. A had no insulating covering, B was wrapped in a piece of cloth, and C was covered with a layer of aluminum foil. All three were placed in the same classroom, away from direct sunlight. The students wanted to compare the mass of solid ice remaining after set periods of time. They were not testing commercial products or claiming to have discovered the best insulation for every situation. The teacher asked them to keep the starting amounts equal and to record the exact time of each observation. She explained that the mass of solid ice remaining was not the same as the mass that had already melted.

独自Read|Paragraph 2

After twenty minutes, students measured the solid ice still present in each container. A had sixty grams remaining, B had eighty grams, and C had seventy grams. They calculated the melted amount by subtracting each remaining mass from the starting one hundred grams. Therefore, forty grams had melted in A, twenty in B, and thirty in C. A student wrote that B had lost eighty grams because its remaining amount was eighty. The teacher corrected the mistake: eighty grams was still solid, so only twenty had melted according to the classroom record. The group also calculated that B had twice as much solid ice remaining as the amount that had melted in A. The teacher asked them to check that comparison carefully, since eighty grams was twice forty grams but not necessarily a statement about heat transfer.

独自Read|Paragraph 3

After forty minutes, the teacher recorded a second set of values. A had twenty grams of solid ice remaining, B fifty-five, and C forty. The total amount melted since the beginning was therefore eighty grams for A, forty-five for B, and sixty for C. The group noticed that B still had the largest solid amount in this particular test, but they did not know whether the same outcome would occur with a different container size or room temperature. Another student calculated that the additional amount melting between minute twenty and minute forty was forty grams for A, twenty-five for B, and thirty for C. The teacher approved these calculations but reminded the class that the experiment had involved only one set of containers. It would take repeated trials to assess how stable the pattern was.

独自Read|Paragraph 4

The class then discussed the measurements themselves. Each time the students checked a sample, they had to remove its cover briefly and separate remaining ice from liquid water. These actions could affect the sample, even if everyone tried to work quickly. The teacher recommended recording how long each container was open during a measurement. One member also suggested taking the temperature of the air near each cup, since the room might not have been perfectly uniform. The group had measured the solid mass but not the exact temperature of each ice surface. They also had not compared several kinds of cloth or foil. A student wanted to write that cloth always kept ice solid longer than aluminum. The teacher rejected that generalization because the experiment had examined only one arrangement of each covering.

独自Read|Paragraph 5

For the school exhibition, the group made a table showing the starting one hundred grams, the solid mass after twenty minutes, and the solid mass after forty minutes. It also added a separate column for the amount melted, calculated from the original mass. The students could say that B retained the largest solid mass at both later observations in their classroom data. They could not claim that its cloth covering would perform best in every environment. Their report described the unmeasured air differences and the limits of a single trial. The teacher praised the group for explaining the meaning of each number before comparing it with another. The final lesson was that a clear scientific English description should distinguish what remained from what changed and should never make a larger claim than the available evidence supports.

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 2

Paragraph 3

Paragraph 4

Paragraph 5
