最重要｜目的はso that＋節、程度・結果はso＋形容詞／副詞＋that
目的：I studied hard so that I could pass.（合格できるよう努力した）。程度・結果：I was so tired that I fell asleep.（疲れすぎて眠った）。目的節にはcan/could/will/wouldなどが頻繁に使われますが、必ず助動詞が必要というわけではありません。程度構文ではsoの直後がtiredやquicklyなどになります。
文意の判定｜意図した結果か、実際に生じた結果か
She spoke clearly so that we could understand. は理解させる意図を述べています。She spoke so clearly that we understood. は明瞭さが実際の理解につながったと述べています。意図と結果が同じ内容でも、どちらを主張するかに違いがあります。

Q. so thatの後にcanは必ず必要？
いいえ。ただし目的を示すときにはcan/couldなどの助動詞がよく使われます。
Q. so thatとso … thatを交換できますか？
原則としてそのまま交換できません。目的と程度・結果で文の意味・語順が変わります。
Q. so difficult thatとtoo difficult toは同じ？
意味が近い書き換えは可能ですが、too … toは後ろに動詞原形が続き、主語や否定の意味に注意します。
