Students in a local science club wanted to find out whether the school garden received enough rain. They placed three rain gauges in different areas. During the first week, the amount of rain was almost the same at all three locations. In the second week, however, the gauge near a large tree showed much less water than the other two. One student suggested that the tree had blocked some rain. Another student noticed that the gauge might not have been standing straight. Instead of reporting that the tree was the only cause, the group checked the equipment and repeated the measurement. The new readings were still slightly lower near the tree, but the difference was smaller. The students concluded that reliable measurements should be taken more than once before making a strong claim.

  1. How many rain gauges did the students use?
  2. What was unusual during the second week?
  3. What did one student think the tree had done?
  4. What possible equipment problem did another student notice?
  5. What happened after the students repeated the measurement?
  6. What lesson did the group learn?

The Greenfield Community Center is organizing an English discussion event. It was originally open to everyone, but more than sixty people applied for a room that holds only forty. The organizers decided to hold two sessions instead of canceling the event. Students who registered before Monday will attend the morning session. Those who registered later will receive an email offering an afternoon place. Participants must reply to the email within two days; otherwise, the place may be offered to someone on the waiting list. The organizers will provide printed discussion cards, but participants should bring their own pens. They also ask each student to prepare one question about a local environmental problem. The goal is not to give a perfect speech. It is to listen carefully and respond to another person’s idea.

  1. Why did the center decide to hold two sessions?
  2. Who will attend the morning session?
  3. What will later applicants receive?
  4. What may happen if they do not reply within two days?
  5. What must students bring themselves?
  6. What is the event’s main goal?

A town library tried to help teenagers read more English books. At first, students could borrow only one easy English book each week. The library later allowed them to borrow up to three and added short descriptions to the shelves. In the following month, the number of books borrowed rose from eighty to one hundred and twenty. Some librarians believed that the descriptions helped students choose books more confidently. However, the library had also opened for an extra hour on Saturdays, and the number of visitors had increased. The staff therefore did not claim that the descriptions alone caused the rise. They decided to count visitors and borrowed books separately over the next two months. They also planned to ask students whether they finished the books, because borrowing a book does not necessarily mean reading it completely.

  1. How many books could a student borrow each week at first?
  2. What was the new maximum?
  3. How many books were borrowed in the later month?
  4. What change in opening hours could also have affected the result?
  5. Why did the staff avoid claiming a single cause?
  6. Why will the staff ask whether books were finished?

A student council studied how younger children travel to an after-school center. Their first questionnaire asked, ‘Do you agree that walking is the best way?’ Most respondents selected yes. A teacher pointed out that the question suggested a preferred answer and might not show what families actually needed. The students rewrote it as, ‘How do you usually travel to the center, and what is difficult about that journey?’ The new answers showed that some families walked, some used buses, and others traveled by car. Several students said that the bus was convenient but did not run often after six. Others said they liked walking but were worried about dark roads in winter. The council then proposed better lighting near the center and clearer bus information instead of telling every family to choose the same method.

  1. What was wrong with the first question?
  2. What two things did the revised question ask?
  3. What was one problem with buses?
  4. Why were some people worried about walking?
  5. What did the council propose near the center?
  6. What else did the council propose?

  1. Three.。three rain gauges
  2. The gauge near a large tree showed much less water.。
  3. Blocked some rain.。suggested
  4. The gauge might not have been standing straight.。might not have は断定ではない。
  5. The difference became smaller.。still slightly lower と smaller を区別。
  6. Reliable measurements should be repeated before strong claims.。

  1. More people applied than the room could hold.。60
  2. Students who registered before Monday.。before Monday。
  3. An email offering an afternoon place.。
  4. Their place may go to someone on the waiting list.。otherwise

  1. One.。at first の制限を確認。
  2. Three.。up to three は最大3冊。
  3. One hundred and twenty.。80
  4. An extra hour on Saturdays.。
  5. Visitor numbers and opening hours also changed.。

  1. It suggested that walking was the best answer.。
  2. Usual travel methods and difficulties during the journey.。
  3. They did not run often after six.。
  4. Roads were dark in winter.。
  5. Better lighting.。
  6. Clearer bus information.。
