PROGRESS IN ENGLISH 21 REVISED BOOK 1 Lesson 17の主要文法は「There is / There are」です。 中高一貫校の中1・中2で単数・複数、some／any、Is there…？／Are there…？が混乱している場合は、「thereではなく、その後の名詞の数と可算・不可算を判断する」ことが出発点です。出版社エデックのREVISED BOOK 1文法一覧でLesson 17の項目を確認できます。なおLesson 14はsome／any、Lesson 15は数量の表現、Lesson 16は助動詞のため、前の単元が曖昧なら先に復習します。

まず確認：REVISED BOOK 1 Lesson 17の位置づけ
株式会社エデックの公式商品ページによると、REVISED BOOK 1は中1から中2向けとされ、Lesson 14ではsome・any、Lesson 15では数量・分量、Lesson 16ではcan・should・have to、Lesson 17ではThere is/are…を主要文法として扱います。この連続性を意識し、There are some books.とAre there any books?のように、既習の名詞の数やsome・anyと結び付けて勉強すると理解しやすくなります。
ただし、出版社の一覧は主要文法を示すもので、個々の学校の試験範囲、授業中の例文、考査の配点を示すものではありません。学校の範囲表、TEXT、授業プリント、指定のWORKBOOKやSELF-STUDYを確認した上で取り組んでください。また、公式ページはBOOK 1のREVISED版と旧版の副教材を混ぜて使用できないと案内しています。
There isとThere areの意味と仕組み
There is a cat under the table.は「テーブルの下に猫が1匹います」、There are three cats under the table.は「テーブルの下に猫が3匹います」です。日本語では「〜があります・います」と訳すことが多い表現です。英語ではa catが単数、three catsが複数なので、isとareを選び分けます。
数えられない名詞には通常There isを使います。There is some water in the glass.やThere is a little milk in the fridge.のような形です。There are some water…とはしません。一方、There are some students in the classroom.ではstudentsが複数なのでareです。
thereの後ではなく、続く名詞でis/areを決める
There is one chair by the door.／There are five chairs by the door.のように、直後に置く名詞の数に注目しましょう。Thereという単語だけを見てbe動詞を決めることはできません。また、There is my book.のように既に特定されている物を示す場合は文脈によって不自然になりやすく、My book is on the desk.の方が自然です。「存在を新しく伝える」のか「既知の物の位置を述べる」のかも考えると、理解が深まります。
疑問文：Is there…? / Are there…?
肯定文There is a park near the station.から疑問文を作るとIs there a park near the station?になります。複数の場合、There are two parks near the station.からAre there two parks near the station?となります。is・areをthereの前へ動かすのが基本です。
答え方はIs there a library? — Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t.、Are there any students? — Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.です。Do there is…?のようにdoを使わないこと、答える際もis・areを一致させることを確認してください。
否定文：There isn’t / There aren’t
There is a computer in this room.の否定文はThere isn’t a computer in this room.、There are some books on the shelf.の否定文はThere aren’t any books on the shelf.です。be動詞の後にnotを入れるため、There doesn’t are…としません。
There is no milk in the fridge.のようにnoを使って否定の意味を表すこともできます。学校で習った構文を優先し、まずはThere isn’t any milk.やThere aren’t any books.を正確に書けるか確認しましょう。
someとanyは疑問文・否定文でどう変わる？
There are some apples in the basket.は肯定文です。通常の有無を尋ねるときはAre there any apples in the basket?、否定するときはThere aren’t any apples in the basket.となります。some／anyを変える際にはis／areの選択も忘れないようにしてください。
数えられない名詞ならThere is some rice.→Is there any rice?→There isn’t any rice.です。なお、Would you like some water?など、申し出や依頼では疑問文でもsomeを使える場合があります。すべての疑問文でanyが必要というわけではありません。
How manyとThere areをつなげる
How many books are there on the desk? は「机の上に本が何冊ありますか」と数を尋ねます。答えはThere are three books on the desk.などです。How manyの後ろのbooksは複数形で、are thereという語順になることに注意してください。How many book is there…?ではありません。
How much water is there in the bottle?は「瓶にどれくらいの水がありますか」という意味です。waterは数えられない名詞なのでmuchとisを使います。数量の聞き方を復習するときは、学校の範囲に含まれる表現だけを優先してください。
場所を表す前置詞と一緒に覚える
There is a dog under the desk.／There is a clock above the door.／There are two shops near the station.など、There is/areの文では場所を表す語がよく使われます。in、on、under、near、behind、betweenなどの意味を取り違えると、文法が正しくても内容理解で失点します。
betweenは一般に二つのものの間を表し、There is a park between the library and the station.のように使います。学校の教科書に出てくる場所の語句を先に確認し、文型と一緒に覚えることが重要です。
定期テストで多い5つの誤り
①There are a dog.→There is a dog.（単数）、②There is three books.→There are three books.（複数）、③Is there some pencils?→Are there any pencils?（複数と通常の質問）、④There aren’t some chairs.→There aren’t any chairs.（通常の否定）、⑤How many apples is there?→How many apples are there?（語順と数）。それぞれ別の原因なので、間違えた部分を一つずつ特定してください。
オリジナル練習40問

第1部・1〜12の解説
- 問1：is。a catは単数。
- 問2：are。three chairsは複数。
- 問3：is。milkは不可算名詞で単数扱い。
- 問4：are。two busesは複数。
- 問5：Is。a bankは単数でIs there…?。
- 問6：Are。studentsは複数でAre there…?。
- 問7：any。通常の否定文aren’tにはany。
- 問8：any。通常の有無を尋ねる疑問文。
- 問9：some。通常の肯定文にsomeを使う。

there is／areは存在を紹介する文でよく使われますが、所有・所在に関する文脈によっては別の文型が自然です。学校の書き換え問題でも、意味が同じになっているかを確認してください。

応用8問の正答・個別解説
- 応用1：is。thereの後に最初に続くan appleに合わせる表現が一般的。複数を後に続けた言い方で、書き換えればThere are two bananas and an apple…も可。
- 応用2：are。最初のtwo bananasが複数。列挙する名詞の順番により変わる例。
- 応用3：Is there any information here?。informationは不可算でis、通常の疑問文なのでany。
- 応用4：There are two parks near the library.。two parksは複数。
- 応用5：How many pens are there on the desk?。How many＋複数形pens＋are there。
- 応用6：There aren’t any oranges in the box.。aren’tとanyを組み合わせる。
- 応用7：How much milk is there in the bottle?。milkは不可算。
- 応用8：Yes, there is.。Is there…？にはisで短答。
応用1〜2は複数の名詞を列挙する場合の近接一致の例です。初学者はまず「There is a cat」「There are two cats」のような単純な単数・複数を確実にし、学校の指導範囲で応用例を扱ってください。
間違い方別に勉強する優先順位
1〜6や23・24・26・27で失点した場合、単数・複数・不可算名詞の判定が優先です。7〜11や25・31で失点した場合、some／anyと否定文の作り方を復習します。13〜22で疑問文の語順に誤りが多い場合はThere is a…?→Is there a…?、There are some…?→Are there any…?の変換を練習してください。37・40を間違えたら、How many＋複数名詞とHow much＋不可算名詞に戻りましょう。
正答数だけでなく、何を誤っているかを本人に説明してもらうことが大切です。単数・複数を取り違えているのに文章を何度も丸暗記するだけでは、別の名詞が使われる定期テストに対応しにくくなります。
定期テスト7日前からの復習スケジュール
7〜6日前は学校の試験範囲と課題を確認し、本記事の40問で文型・語順・単複の弱点を分類します。5〜4日前は学校指定のWORKBOOKや授業プリントの間違いを解き直し、is／areとsome／anyに絞った短い英作文を行います。3〜2日前は学校が利用を認めている音声教材を聞き、場所の語句や疑問文の意味を理解してから英文を書きます。前日は間違えた問題だけを再テストし、新しい問題集を増やさず睡眠を確保します。

Q．数えられない名詞にはThere isを使いますか？
通常そうです。There is some milk.、There is some information.のように単数扱いです。milkやinformationをそのまま複数形にして使わないようにしてください。
Q．How manyの後はThere isですか？
基本はHow many books are there…?のように複数形の名詞とareを使います。How many book is there…?は通常の学校英文法では誤りです。
