NEW TREASURE Stage5 Lesson7
A fictional high school product team designed two packages for locally produced roasted tea. Design A used traditional artwork, while Design B used a larger label with clearer preparation instructions. The team invited thirty-six students from one grade to compare the packages. Sixteen preferred Design A and twenty preferred Design B. Participants chose one design only, and the test did not require them to prepare or taste the tea. The team initially proposed the headline “Most customers prefer the new label.” Their teacher asked them to change “customers” to “student respondents,” because all participants came from the same grade and none had bought the product. The teacher also noted that a preference for the design did not establish that the instructions were easier to follow. A follow-up could give both versions to readers with different backgrounds and ask them to complete the same preparation task. The students decided to preserve the traditional artwork on the back of the larger label, but they treated that choice as an idea for another test rather than a proven improvement.

The fictional tea team estimated that preparing and packaging one box of tea would cost 420 yen in materials and direct work. They considered selling each box for 650 yen at a school-approved fair. The event would also involve a fixed fee of 12,000 yen for shared display equipment and permitted facilities. Under this simplified plan, the contribution per box is the selling price minus the variable cost: 650 minus 420 equals 230 yen. If every box sells at the stated price and there are no other expenses, selling fifty-two boxes would generate 11,960 yen in contribution, slightly less than the fixed fee. Selling fifty-three would generate 12,190 yen, which would cover the fixed fee. The group reminded readers that this is a hypothetical break-even calculation, not a promise of profit. Unsold stock, discounts, taxes and other costs could change the outcome. The team was also waiting for the school’s permission to sell and would not advertise that sales had begun before approval.

A fictional product-design club asked two groups about a proposed reusable tea container. Twenty younger participants and twenty older participants answered the same single-choice question: “Which feature matters most to you?” In the younger group, fourteen selected a clear instruction label and six selected traditional artwork. In the older group, twelve selected the instruction label and eight selected traditional artwork. The students first wrote that eighty percent of the older participants wanted a traditional design, but a classmate checked the figures and corrected the result to eight out of twenty, or forty percent. Across both groups, twenty-six of forty participants selected the instruction label. However, all respondents volunteered for the activity and were not sampled randomly from the local population. The question also forced a choice between two features even though someone might value both. The club decided that future prototypes should be assessed by asking participants to perform an actual task, such as finding a preparation instruction, and by recording any difficulty with the package.

A fictional high school club planned to introduce a small tea gift set at a community fair. Its schedule separated four stages: prototype testing on May 8, design revision by May 15, an application for a school sales permit on May 19, and a proposed fair date of June 6. The team had completed the prototype test but had not finished revising the ingredient and preparation label. The teacher explained that tasting feedback did not establish whether the written instructions or required product information were complete. The club would ask a responsible staff member to check the applicable rules and would not place the product on sale without approval. The fair organiser also warned that the June 6 date was tentative until the venue confirmed the space. A draft advertisement said, “Our new tea set launches on June 6.” The students revised it to, “We hope to present the tea set at the June 6 fair, subject to school approval and venue confirmation.” They considered that the second sentence was less exciting but more accurate.

2: A larger label with clearer preparation instructions.
解答7: About 55.6 percent.
9: The respondents were students from one grade, not actual customers.
解答16: A shortfall of 40 yen.
解答18: Fifty-three boxes. 根拠・計算:ceil(12,000÷230)=53。
解答19: No, the calculation assumes all sales and excludes other costs.
20: No, school approval is pending.

29: No, the participants volunteered and were not randomly sampled.
30: Ask participants to find a preparation instruction using the prototype.
解答31: May 8.
解答32: May 15.
解答33: May 19.
36: Revising the ingredient and preparation label.

40: We hope to present the tea set on June 6, subject to school approval and venue confirmation.
The survey suggests that Design B was more popular among the thirty-six student respondents, with twenty votes compared with sixteen for Design A. However, those respondents were from one grade and did not test whether the instructions were easier to follow. The team should evaluate comprehension before claiming that the design improves usability.
At a proposed price of 650 yen, each box would contribute 230 yen after the estimated variable cost. The simplified model requires at least fifty-three sales to cover 12,000 yen in fixed costs. This result is conditional on the assumptions about price, sales and additional expenses. The school has not yet authorized the sale.
Twenty-six of forty volunteers preferred a clear instruction label. The figures differ by age group, and an initial claim of eighty percent support for traditional artwork among older respondents was incorrect. Because the groups were voluntary and the question forced one choice, the results should guide further testing rather than establish a general market preference.
The club has completed prototype testing, but its product is not ready for a confirmed launch. The label revision, school permit and venue confirmation are separate requirements. A responsible announcement should state that June 6 is a proposed date and avoid implying that sales have been approved. Accurate communication is part of a successful product design process.
