replace A with Bとsubstitute B for Aでは語順が反転する
Replace the old form with the new form.とSubstitute the new form for the old form.は同じ置換を表せますが、substituteのforの前に来るのは代わりに使う新しい物です。旧・新を記号A・Bで書き出すと混同しにくくなります。
substitute A with Bも実際に使われる
一部の説明ではsubstituteの正解をB for Aだけに限定しますが、英語辞典にはsubstitute the old item with the new itemという用法も記載されています。重要なのは単語の組合せではなく、どちらが使われなくなり、どちらが代用されたかです。
replaceは返金・追加購入まで意味しない
壊れたマイクを交換したとしても、追加料金を支払ったか、返金されたかは別情報です。exchanged the faulty microphone for a replacementだけで新しいマイクを追加購入したと解釈しないでください。

Replacing a school timetable（架空の学校事例）
A fictional school published a new timetable for its after-school library programme. The previous document showed sessions beginning at 3 p.m., whereas the approved revision gave 4 p.m. The administrator replaced the old PDF with the revised PDF on the school website. The school did not cancel the programme; only the starting time changed. One student downloaded the old version before the replacement and later shared it with classmates. The librarian clarified that the corrected timetable superseded the earlier file. The programme was scheduled for Friday, and no session had yet taken place at the time of the correction. The school encouraged everyone to check the revision date before using a downloaded file.

Substituting learning materials（架空の学校事例）
A fictional English class originally planned to use printed reading cards for a practice session. The teacher discovered that the cards had not arrived and substituted short audio recordings for the printed cards. The class listened to six recordings, each followed by two questions, so there were twelve questions in total. The teacher explained that using audio instead of print changed the skill being practised: it tested listening as well as comprehension. Students completed the activities, but the teacher did not claim that the results could be compared directly with a reading test. The printed cards were expected the following week, and the teacher planned to use both formats in separate lessons.

A broken microphone exchange（架空の学校事例）
A fictional media club bought a microphone for 3,200 yen for a school podcast. During the first recording, the device produced a constant noise. The club contacted the supplier and exchanged the faulty microphone for a replacement of the same model. The supplier did not refund the purchase, and the club did not buy a second microphone. The replacement worked during a ten-minute test. A student wrote that the club had spent another 3,200 yen; the treasurer corrected this because the microphone had been exchanged without an additional charge. The club planned to record the full podcast the following day, but the short test did not guarantee that the equipment would work perfectly for every future recording.

Replacing figures in a science report（架空の学校事例）
A fictional science group prepared a report on a plant-growth trial. Its first chart mistakenly showed that thirty seedlings had survived, although the original records listed twenty-seven. The teacher checked the source sheets and asked students to replace the incorrect chart with a corrected one. The group also substituted a clearer caption for the original caption so that readers would know the figures referred to surviving plants, not all plants planted at the beginning. The report was updated on Thursday. The correction did not mean that three plants had just died on Thursday; it meant that the initial chart had overstated the number by three. The teacher advised students to record the source of every figure before submitting their next report.

【架空の研究図表】最初の図は生き残った苗を30本と表示したが、元の記録は27本だった。先生は出典票を照合し、誤った図を訂正版に差し替えるよう求めた。また最初の苗数でなく生存数を示すと分かるよう、新しい説明文を元の説明文の代わりに使った。報告は木曜に更新されたが、その日に3本が死んだという意味ではなく、初版が3本多く記していたという訂正だった。
