NEW TREASURE Stage4・5の長文・英作文でmake sure / ensure / check / verifyを使い分けるには、「点検」「根拠による検証」「確認・実行」「状態の確保」を区別します。checkは調べる、verifyは証拠と照合して裏付ける、make sureは確認し確実にする、ensureは必要な状態を実現する語です。慶英会の独自40問で英作文まで練習します。

4つの確認動詞の意味と語法

使い分けの連続例：Check whether the date is correct.（日付が正しいか調べる）→ Verify the date against the original letter.（原文と照らして検証する）→ Make sure the correct date appears on the poster.（ポスター上の日付を確実に正しくする）→ Ensure that everyone receives the corrected poster.（訂正版が全員に届く状態を確保する）。
学校英作文ではensure to doではなくmake sure to doまたはensure that S Vを使うと明確です。verifyは証拠による裏付けが中心ですが、本人確認などにも用いられます。make sureとcheckの意味が重なることもあるため、機械的な一対一訳にはしません。

初見英文での使い分け
Before the school published its survey results, the research club checked whether all responses had been counted. Two members verified the totals against the original forms. The teacher made sure that the graph used the correct labels. Finally, the school introduced a review procedure to ensure that future reports would be checked before publication. These actions served different purposes, even though each was related to accuracy.
全文和訳：学校が調査結果を公開する前に、研究部はすべての回答が集計されたかどうか調べた。部員2人が元の用紙と照合して合計を検証した。先生はグラフのラベルが正しいことを確かめた。最後に学校は今後の報告書が公開前に点検されることを確実にするため、確認手順を導入した。これらの行為はどれも正確さに関係するが、それぞれ目的が異なっていた。
読解では、「check」は作業、「verify」は証拠との突き合わせ、「make sure」は最終確認、「ensure」は制度としての確保です。すべてを『確認する』とだけ書くと、本文の因果や責任の所在が不明瞭になります。
復習順とFAQ
初日に1〜20問を解き、間違えた文だけを単語の型ごとに記録します。翌日に21〜30問の不自然な箇所を説明し、3日後に31〜40問を英文を見ずに再現します。1週間後に上の初見英文を30秒で4文要約できれば、読解と英作文の接続が進んだ目安です。
Q. checkとverifyは同じですか？ 一部の場面で重なりますが、verifyは根拠との照合による確証を強調します。
Q. make sure to doとensure thatは置き換えられますか？ 行為を確実に行うのか、状態を実現するのかが異なります。構文も変わるため機械的な置き換えはできません。
