Original Reading: A school environmental club asked students to review a draft guide for an exhibition. The first version was fairly clear, but several visitors said it was rather long for a simple notice. Some technical terms were quite difficult for younger readers. The editor decided to divide the guide into shorter sections and add a glossary. After a second trial, most respondents said the updated explanations were pretty easy to follow. The teacher warned the students that such descriptions reflected participants’ evaluations and did not prove that every sentence was factually accurate. The club therefore checked the technical information against its source documents. One statement about energy savings turned out to be fairly accurate in its arithmetic but incomplete because it omitted the number of hours the device would operate. Another estimate was quite impossible under the stated budget because it exceeded the total funds available. The editor corrected those sections and asked the club to distinguish strength of evaluation from certainty of evidence. In the final review, the students explained that the word quite could vary in strength depending on the adjective and context, while pretty was less suitable for a very formal report. They used precise figures when numerical facts were available and more cautious adjectives when describing people’s impressions.
