A school opened a new room. The room has twenty-four seats. なら、最初のa new roomを次の文のthe roomで受けています。

Known-to-Newとは?

  • 1|最初に対象を名詞で導入する:a study room, a reading club, a proposalなど。
  • 2|次の文の冒頭で同じ対象を受ける:the room, the club, this proposalなど。
  • 4|直前の事実をまとめる名詞句で受ける:this observation, these figures, the missing valueなど。

Twenty seats were occupied. It is important. This single observation matters because it shows the room was well used at that moment.

1:The school opened a study room with twenty-four seats.

2:The room had twenty occupied seats at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

3:Twenty of the twenty-four seats were occupied at that time.

4:That observation was only a spot check and did not describe the entire day.

5:This single seat count cannot establish the number of different visitors.

6:Because long-term demand is unknown, the school is considering a limited trial.

7:The proposed trial has not been approved.

8:Any such trial would require checking staff availability and safe departure arrangements.

9:The available evidence supports further investigation rather than immediate permanent expansion.

10:The school opened a study room with twenty-four seats. At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, twenty of those seats were occupied. This single observation shows considerable use at that moment, but it does not establish daily demand or the number of different visitors. Waiting times were not recorded either. Because these questions remain unanswered, the school is considering a limited trial of longer opening hours rather than an immediate permanent change. Such a trial would also require staff supervision and safe departure procedures. The proposal has not yet been approved. A careful next step would be to collect more observations before deciding whether longer hours are practical.

11:The school held two optional English reading-club sessions during lunch.

12:The first session recorded twelve attendances.

13:The second session recorded sixteen attendances.

14:The second count was four attendances higher than the first.

15:These attendance counts may include the same student more than once.

16:The two sessions recorded twenty-eight attendance events, not necessarily twenty-eight different people.

17:Although the recorded participation increased, reading progress was not assessed.

18:The staff time required for regular sessions is also unknown.

19:A longer trial could record unique participants, feedback and staffing needs.

20:The school held two voluntary English reading-club sessions during lunch. The first session recorded twelve attendances, and the second recorded sixteen, an increase of four attendance events. These counts do not show the number of different students because some may have attended both meetings. The sessions were not followed by reading tests or satisfaction surveys, so the available evidence concerns participation rather than improved language ability. Practical questions also remain about rooms and staff time. A longer trial could address these questions by recording unique participants, gathering feedback and checking the resources needed for regular meetings before the school changes its timetable.

21:A committee proposed a small school garden.

22:The proposed garden has an initial budget estimate of 70,000 yen.

23:The estimate consists of 50,000 yen for materials and 20,000 yen for setup support.

24:Together, these two planned amounts total 70,000 yen.

25:These are estimates; no corresponding payments have been reported.

26:The estimate does not yet include a verified annual maintenance budget.

27:A safety review is also still pending.

28:The garden project has not been approved or built.

29:Before approving the project, the school should examine maintenance and safety.

30:A school committee proposed a small garden with an initial estimated budget of 70,000 yen. The proposed amount includes 50,000 yen for materials and 20,000 yen for setup support. These figures are estimates rather than payments already made. The plan also lacks a verified annual maintenance budget, and a safety review has not been completed. As a result, the proposal should not be described as an approved project. Before the school makes a decision, it needs to examine the ongoing costs and operating conditions. A carefully documented plan would help the committee explain what is known and what still requires review.

31:The project compared records from two device-test conditions, A and B.

32:Under Condition A, twenty devices were tested and no failures were recorded.

33:By contrast, Condition B had twenty tested devices but no recorded failure count.

34:NR means that the failure count was not recorded.

35:The missing value cannot be treated as an observed zero.

36:The observed failure rate in Condition A was zero percent for those twenty tests.

37:The failure rate under Condition B cannot be calculated from the available log.

38:Even the observed zero in Condition A does not establish long-term reliability.

39:Future testing should record all failure counts and the conditions of each test.

40:A device project compared two test conditions. Under Condition A, twenty devices were checked and zero failures were recorded, giving an observed failure rate of zero percent. Condition B also involved twenty tested devices, but its failure count was marked NR, or not recorded. This missing value cannot be treated as another zero, so a numerical comparison of failure rates is not possible. The first result also covers only the twenty tests and does not establish reliability across a full year. Future records should identify failure counts, observation periods and test conditions before broader claims are made.
