The Bean Plant Experiment
The science club at Maple Junior High wanted to find out whether a different watering schedule could help bean plants grow. Hana, Sota, and Mei worked together on a project for the school exhibition. They prepared six small pots with the same kind of bean seeds. They placed three pots near a classroom window and three on a shelf in the hallway. They called the first group A and the second group B.
For two weeks, Hana watered the plants in Group A every morning. Sota watered Group B every other morning, but he gave those plants more water each time. Mei measured the height of each plant every Friday and wrote the numbers in a notebook. At the end of the project, the average height in Group A was eighteen centimeters, while the average in Group B was fourteen centimeters. One plant in Group B did not grow at all.
At first, Hana wrote, “Watering every day makes plants grow taller.” Mei stopped her before she printed the poster. “Our plants were also in different places,” she said. “Group A received sunlight through the window, but Group B did not get as much light. We changed two conditions: water and light. We cannot tell which one caused the difference.” Hana agreed to change the poster.
The club checked its notes again. The notebook included the dates and the plants’ heights, but it did not include the total amount of water given to either group. It also did not record the temperature in the hallway. Sota explained that he had forgotten to write down the amount of water each time. The students decided to report what they knew instead of pretending to have complete data.
For the exhibition, they made two graphs. The first showed the average height of each group at the end of two weeks. The second showed how the heights had changed from one Friday to the next. They added a note under the graphs: “These results do not prove that watering every day is better. The groups also received different amounts of light.” The principal praised the students for being careful with their conclusion.
Next month, they plan to repeat the experiment. This time they will put all six pots in the same place and measure how much water they use. They will still need to consider other conditions, but the new plan should help them compare watering schedules more fairly. Hana said that a good experiment did not always give a simple answer; sometimes it showed what they needed to check next.

FAQ
