結論:NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage 2 Lesson 6の受動態を応用するなら、look after→be looked after、talk about→be talked about、take care of→be taken care of、refer to→be referred toのように、動詞と結びついた前置詞を消さないことが重要です。The plants were taken care of.

- look after:Teachers looked after the children. → The children were looked after.(世話をする)
- talk about:They talked about the plan. → The plan was talked about.(話題にする)
- take care of:They took care of the plants. → The plants were taken care of.(世話をする)
- refer to:They referred to the map. → The map was referred to.(言及する)
- speak to:The volunteer spoke to Ken. → Ken was spoken to.(話しかける)
look afterとlook atは意味がまったく違う
The children were looked after. The painting was looked at.
The speech was listened to by the students. The students listened to the speech.
Cambridge Dictionaryはlook after・listen to・look atなどのprepositional verbsを、一まとまりとして覚えることを推奨しています。

A fictional middle school prepared an English exhibition. The younger volunteers were looked after by their teacher during the preparations. They were told to follow school safety rules and ask for help with equipment. The students talked about the display plan, and the plan was talked about again at a meeting.
One group took care of some classroom plants. Its report said, ‘The plants were taken care of by the students.’ Another group used an official school map. During the presentation, the map was referred to several times. The teacher explained that in each passive sentence a preposition remained after the past participle.
A draft also contained the sentence, ‘The visitors were looked after by the map.’ The teacher said the sentence had confused two meanings. A map could be looked at or referred to, but it did not care for people. The students rewrote the guide to say that a volunteer helped the visitors and referred to the map while explaining directions.
After the exhibition, the group dealt with questions from visitors. Several students thanked the volunteers for their careful explanations. The class did not claim that every visitor had understood every instruction because that result had not been measured. Its final report used the active voice where it sounded natural and the passive where the subject of an action was more important.
- Q33. Who looked after younger volunteers?
- Q34. What did students discuss in the meeting?
- Q35. Who took care of the classroom plants?
- Q36. What was referred to during the presentation?
- Q37. Why was ‘visitors were looked after by the map’ incorrect in context?
- Q38. What did the volunteer use when giving directions?
- Q39. What did the group deal with after the exhibition?
- Q40. Did the class prove that every visitor understood all instructions?

The children were looked
世話をするlook afterならwere looked afterとします。
take care ofのofはなぜ残りますか?
