結論｜near・nearby・close to・next to
- near＋名詞：The gym is near the library.（近く）。near ofとはしない。
- nearby：There is a shop nearby.（近くに）／a nearby shop（近くの店）。標準的にはnearby to the shopとはしない。
- close to＋名詞：The hall is close to the entrance.（近い）。close to finishingのように完成間近にも使える。
- next to＋名詞：The desk is next to the window.（すぐ横）。隣接を具体的に示す。
- 注意：nearとclose toは互換となる場合もあるため、『すぐ隣』を強調する場合にnext toと書く。

独自英文：At Meadow Hall School, the student council prepared a visitor map for an open day. The reception desk was next to the main entrance, so visitors could find it immediately. The first-aid room was next to the reception desk. The library was close to the entrance but was not directly beside reception: visitors had to walk past two classrooms to reach it. The gym was near the library, although the two buildings did not share a wall. A nearby cafe offered drinks outside the school gate, but it was not part of the school. On Thursday, the club checked the map and noticed that an arrow pointed to the wrong room. The students corrected it before printing twenty copies. On Friday morning, the map was ready, but the open day had not yet begun. The council reminded visitors to ask at reception rather than guess the location of an emergency exit.

全文和訳

よくある質問
nearとclose toはどちらが正しいですか？
場所が近いという意味でどちらも自然なことがあります。前置詞toが必要なのはclose toです。
nearby the stationは正しいですか？
通常はnear the station、a nearby station、the station nearbyのように表します。
next toは必ず近いという意味ですか？
場所についてはすぐ隣・隣接を示します。nearやnearbyより具体的な位置関係です。
close toのtoの後は名詞だけですか？
場所の名詞だけでなくclose to finishingのように動名詞も続きます。
nearなら隣の部屋という意味ですか？
必ずしもそうではありません。隣室ならnext toなどで明示できます。
