Hiroshima Global Academy
Paper 1
Language A: language and literatureのPaper 1は未見の非文学文の分析です。
The writer uses a question.(筆者は疑問文を使う。) The final question invites readers to take part in the proposed review rather than simply accept the writer’s conclusion.(最後の問いは、筆者の結論をただ受け入れるのでなく、提案された見直しに参加するよう読者を促す。)
Before You Remove the Seats|
A1 Dear station managers, before you remove the seats beside Platform Two, please sit there for ten minutes. Watch the passenger who lowers a heavy bag with a sigh. Watch the parent who ties a child’s shoe. From a planning diagram, the benches may look like objects occupying space. From a tired traveller’s position, they are places where a difficult journey becomes manageable.
A2 We agree that the walking route must remain clear. A seat that blocks a doorway helps nobody. But removing every bench would make the same rule carry different costs: a passenger who can stand easily loses little; a passenger who cannot loses a place to wait. Could we first move two benches away from the narrowest section and mark the walking route more clearly? A four-week trial would let staff record both obstructions and requests for seating.
A3 We are not asking you to choose comfort over safe movement. We are asking you to test a design that considers both. Publish the observations, including problems, and invite passengers to discuss them. The station is not only a place people pass through. It is also a place where people must sometimes stop. Will you sit with us before deciding where nobody may sit?
Guiding question:How does the letter move its audience from observing passengers to considering a shared decision?
問4:結びのsit with usは、冒頭のsit thereをどう発展させていますか。
The writer uses repetition and a question. These techniques are effective. Everyone will agree to keep every seat.
1:The letter mainly addresses the station managers. It asks them to observe passengers and test an alternative seating arrangement before making a decision.
2:The repeated command “Watch” directs the managers towards ordinary actions rather than an abstract plan. The contrast between the diagram and the traveller’s position encourages them to judge space through passengers’ experiences.
3:By accepting the need for a clear route, the writers establish a concern they share with the managers. They then present the trial as a practical response to that concern rather than a rejection of safety.
4:At the beginning, “sit there” asks the managers to observe a particular place. At the end, “sit with us” turns sitting into an invitation to participate in a shared discussion.
5:The opening positions the managers as observers of experiences that a diagram may hide. The trial then gives them a way to investigate both movement and seating needs. The final invitation positions them as possible partners in a decision, not simply targets of criticism.
6:The repeated “Watch” asks managers to notice passengers’ practical difficulties. After the writers propose a trial, their final question invites managers to discuss the decision with users. These choices support cooperation, but they do not prove that every reader will agree or that every seat will remain.
7:The letter makes cooperation seem possible by changing the managers’ role from distant planners to potential partners. Its opening observations give a human context to the later proposal for a monitored trial. The return to sitting at the end makes the proposed review a shared activity rather than a demand for automatic agreement.
The letter encourages station managers to become partners in a decision rather than remain distant planners. Its repeated command “Watch” directs attention towards small human actions, such as lowering a bag. The contrast between a “planning diagram” and a traveller’s position then makes seating a question of lived experience, not simply occupied space.
However, the writers do not leave the argument at sympathy. Their agreement that the route must remain clear acknowledges the managers’ responsibility. The proposed trial connects this shared concern with a concrete process: staff would record both obstructions and requests for seats. This movement from observation to investigation makes cooperation appear practical.
Finally, “sit with us” recalls the opening request to sit, but adds a relationship. The managers are invited to discuss evidence with passengers rather than simply surrender their authority. Together, the opening, proposal and closing question frame a shared review as possible. They invite agreement without establishing that agreement has already occurred.

When the Clock Becomes the Customer|
B1 Our town repair desk has a new ambition: finish each consultation in eight minutes. Count the arrivals. Count the completed forms. Count the minutes until the next person enters. The numbers would be wonderfully tidy. A visitor holding a broken radio, however, does not arrive as a tidy number. Sometimes the first question reveals the fault. Sometimes the fifth question reveals that the visitor wants to learn, not merely leave with a working object.
B2 Of course, nobody enjoys waiting all afternoon. A queue is a real problem, and clear appointment times could help. Yet a target becomes troublesome when it replaces the purpose it was meant to serve. If volunteers must stop explaining a repair because the bell is about to ring, the clock has become the customer. The person across the table has become an interruption.
B3 Keep a record of waiting times, but place another question beside it: did the visitor leave understanding more than when they arrived? Invite comments about explanations, not only speed. A useful service needs evidence, but its easiest measure need not be its highest value. The desk should help us repair objects and pass on knowledge. Let the clock tell us when a conversation begins, not decide what that conversation is worth.
Guiding question:How do repetition and the changing role of the clock support the editorial’s argument about service?
11:the clock has become the customerとthe person … an interruptionの関係を、英語二文で分析しなさい。
The writer talks about numbers, a clock and comments. The desk repairs radios. This is an interesting article.
9:The writer questions a time target that replaces the purpose of helping visitors. The writer also accepts that waiting is a real problem and that recording time can be useful.
10:The repeated “Count” creates a brisk, mechanical rhythm that presents service as a sequence of measurable tasks. The visitor with a broken radio then disrupts this tidy pattern by introducing a purpose that may take time to discover.
11:Making the clock “the customer” gives a measuring tool the position that should belong to a person. Calling the person “an interruption” completes this reversal and exposes a service that has lost sight of its purpose.
12:In the middle, the clock acts as a customer whose demands displace the visitor. In the final sentence, it becomes a limited tool that marks a beginning without determining the conversation’s value.
13:The concession recognises that residents may reasonably worry about queues. The proposal then combines time records with comments about understanding. Together, these moves make the clock metaphor part of an argument for better priorities rather than an attack on all measurement.
14:The repeated “Count” initially reduces service to a mechanical sequence of measurements. The image of the clock as “the customer” makes that reduction appear to reverse the relationship between tool and person. By ending with a more limited role for the clock, the writer argues that measurement should support understanding rather than define its value.
15:The text explicitly accepts the problem of queues and asks readers to keep time records. It therefore does not support a claim that all time management should be rejected, and no actual reader response is reported. A stronger central argument is that the clock’s changing role separates useful measurement from misplaced authority.
The editorial uses repetition and a changing image of the clock to argue that measurement should serve people. The repeated “Count” creates a mechanical rhythm in the opening, making efficiency sound like a series of completed tasks. The visitor with a radio interrupts that pattern: a person’s purpose may emerge only through further conversation.
In the middle, the clock becomes “the customer”, while the visitor becomes “an interruption”. This reversal exposes the danger of treating a time target as the service’s purpose. However, the concession that queues are a real problem prevents the criticism from becoming a simple rejection of efficiency. Readers concerned about waiting are given a place within the argument.
The ending then assigns the clock a narrower role. It may mark the start of a conversation, but it should not decide its worth. Alongside the proposal to seek comments about understanding, this final contrast turns the earlier criticism into a positive priority: evidence should help the desk pass on knowledge, not replace that goal.

Borrow a Question|
Begin with one object
C1 You do not need to recognise every object in this room. Choose one that makes you pause: a spoon with a worn handle, a ticket with no date, a box whose key is missing. Look before you read the label. What can the marks tell you? What can they not tell you? A good visit can begin with uncertainty, not a correct answer.
Follow the gap
C2 Now read the label and notice where its explanation stops. The label may name the maker but leave the owner unknown. Ask a guide what evidence supports the account and what remains uncertain. You are welcome to disagree with an interpretation if you can explain why. This room is not a test in which the museum holds every answer. It is a place to practise asking better questions together.
Leave a question
C3 Before you go, write one question on a card and place it on the question board. Next month, the guides will choose several questions to investigate and explain what they found. Not every question will be answered; some evidence may no longer exist. Still, your question can shape what we look for next. Take away a fact if you wish. Leave behind a reason for us to keep looking.
Guiding question:How does the guide use instructions and its sequence of sections to give visitors an active role?

17:The guide mainly addresses people visiting the museum, including those unfamiliar with its objects. It encourages them to observe, question interpretations and contribute a question of their own.
18:The opening reassurance removes the expectation that visitors must already recognise everything. The commands “Choose” and “Look” then offer a manageable first action, making participation possible without prior expertise.
19:The guide rejects the image of a test in which the museum possesses every answer. It instead presents the room as a shared space for practising asking questions, allowing visitors to become participants in interpretation.
解説:not a testとa place to practise … togetherを対にします。
20:“Take away” presents knowledge as something a visitor may receive. “Leave behind” adds a contribution that can influence the museum’s future inquiry, so the visit becomes an exchange rather than only an act of collection.
21:“Begin with one object” gives visitors a small starting point as observers. “Follow the gap” moves them towards questioning the limits of an explanation. “Leave a question” then offers a way to contribute to the museum’s future work.
22:The headings guide visitors from choosing an object to contributing a question. The text acknowledges incomplete evidence and invites visitors to question an interpretation if they can give reasons. No colours or photographs are supplied, and the guide explicitly states that not every question will be answered.
23:The instructions organise the visit, but they do not remove all choice. Visitors may choose an object that interests them and may disagree with an interpretation if they explain why. The phrase “if you wish” also makes taking away a fact optional, so the commands guide participation rather than demand identical responses.
The guide gives visitors an active role through a sequence of manageable instructions. Its opening reassurance, “You do not need to recognise every object”, welcomes people without prior expertise. “Choose” and “Look” then turn that welcome into action, while the first heading limits the task to one object rather than an entire collection.
The next section develops observation into inquiry. Asking where the label’s explanation stops encourages visitors to examine the museum’s knowledge instead of merely receiving it. The contrast between a “test” and a place to practise asking questions “together” changes the institution from an unquestionable authority into a partner in investigation.
Finally, the instruction to leave a question makes participation extend beyond the visit. The paired phrases “Take away” and “Leave behind” present knowledge as an exchange: visitors can receive information and contribute a direction for future work. The admission that some questions may remain unanswered limits the promise honestly. Overall, the progression invites visitors to become contributors without requiring them to arrive as experts.
