英検2級の科学説明文で、比較条件の違いを読み落とすと『効果が証明された』と過大に解釈しがちです。 この記事は中高一貫校の中2・中3・高校生が英検2級の読解力を高めるための独自4長文・24問です。全英文・全文和訳・根拠付きの全解答を掲載しています。実在の調査・行政予算を紹介するものではなく、慶英会が作成した架空の演習素材です。

結論｜何を変えたか（条件）、何を測ったか（測定値）、何を言えるか（結論の範囲）を分ける。実験条件以外の違いがあれば、因果関係を安易に断定できません。

3つの読解ルール

• compared with は比較対象を示す。条件が同じか本文を確認する。
• observed / recorded は観測、might / could / may は可能性を示す。
• 短期間の測定結果を将来の長期効果にそのまま拡大しない。

独自長文1｜異なる照明と植物の成長

Students grew two groups of the same plant for four weeks. One group received ordinary classroom light, while the other received a new LED lamp for the same number of hours each day. Both groups were given equal amounts of water and the same kind of soil. The students measured plant height every Friday. At the end, plants under the LED were slightly taller on average. However, there were only six plants in each group, and the researchers did not measure fruit production. Their teacher said the results were promising but did not prove that the lamp would improve farm harvests.

独自長文2｜教室の換気方法

Teachers plan to repeat the comparison with equal class sizes before deciding which method to recommend. The study did not test students’ examination scores or concentration.

独自長文3｜雨水タンクの水量

Two community gardens installed rainwater tanks of the same size. Garden A placed its tank under a roof that collected water from a large surface; Garden B used a smaller roof.
