“apply to become a candidate”は立候補の応募、“be approved to run”は候補者としての承認です。

The student council at Greenhill School is inviting applications for two representative positions. Candidates must currently be in their second or third year and submit a short statement by Wednesday at four. A statement should explain one school problem the candidate wants to address and a realistic first step. Students may ask a teacher to check their English, but the ideas must be their own. The council will review the applications on Thursday and announce the approved candidates on Friday. Submitting a statement does not guarantee that a student will appear on the ballot. Candidates may introduce their plans during a short meeting next Monday. The school will not publish anyone’s private contact details on the election page.

Four students have been approved to run for the two student council positions. Each will have three minutes to explain a proposal at Monday’s assembly. Students may ask questions afterward, but personal criticism is not allowed under the school meeting rules. The candidates can distribute one page of written information, provided it is checked by a teacher beforehand. A proposal about keeping the study room open later has attracted interest, although no decision has been made about the room. The election is intended to choose representatives who will discuss proposals, not to approve every proposal immediately. Students should read the candidates’ statements and consider whether the suggested first steps are practical before voting.

Students will vote for student council representatives on Tuesday during the lunch period. Only students who are enrolled at the school on election day may vote. They must use the school’s secure voting page and select no more than two different candidates. Choosing three names will make the ballot invalid, while selecting only one candidate is allowed. A student can submit the ballot once and cannot change it after final submission. Teachers will provide instructions about using the page but will not tell students which candidates to choose. The voting system will count the ballots after the page closes at two in the afternoon. Results will not be announced until a teacher has reviewed the count for possible technical errors.

The student council election received 180 submitted ballots. Twelve were invalid because they did not follow the selection rule, leaving 168 valid ballots. The four candidates received different numbers of selections, and the two candidates with the highest totals were chosen as representatives. Because each voter could choose one or two people, the total number of candidate selections was greater than the number of valid ballots. Teachers checked the count before publishing the results. The elected students will attend an orientation next week to learn how council meetings work. Winning the election does not automatically approve a candidate’s campaign proposals. Those proposals will be discussed at later meetings, and the school has not announced any changes to its study room schedule.
