since には「〜以来」という時間の意味と「〜なので」という理由の意味があり、as も時間・理由など複数の用法を持ちます。because は理由を直接示すときに適します。時間の説明と原因の説明を取り違えず、元の文章が何を事実として述べているか確認しましょう。
対象：英検3級〜1級の英作文を練習する中高生。原文・学校・人数は学習用の架空設定で、英検過去問や教科書を転載したものではありません。
必ず区別したい4つの原則
- since＋起点は「〜以来」。過去の出来事から現在まで続いているか確認する。
- since・as が理由を示す場合、原因が明確か確認し、曖昧なら because を選ぶ。
- as は「〜しているとき」という同時進行の用法もある。
- 前後関係だけでは原因を断定できない。未測定の成績改善や人数を加えない。
