英作文の『参加する』には複数の英語表現があります。attend は会議・授業などに出席する、join は団体に加入する・一緒に加わる、participate in / take part in は活動に実際に参加することです。会場にいた人がすべての実習を行ったとは限りません。

押さえる4つの語法・解釈
- attend the lesson / meeting：出席する。通常 attend to a meeting とはしない。
- join a club / join a team：団体に加わる。join in a game はゲームに加わる文脈でも可能。
- participate in an activity：活動に積極的に参加する。in が必要。
- take part in a project：企画・活動に参加する。出席・加入・実参加の人数を区別する。
典型的な失点例を修正する
修正前：
All thirty people joined the science club because thirty attended its open meeting.
改善後：
Thirty people attended the club’s open meeting, but attendance alone does not establish how many joined.
解説：説明会への出席とクラブへの入会は別の出来事。join の意味を勝手に付加しません。

よくある質問
attend と participate in は必ず違いますか。
出席した人が活動にも参加した場合は両方成り立ちます。ただし出席だけを確認したなら実参加を断定しません。
join in は誤りですか。
join in a game や join in the discussion のように使えます。join a club とは構文が異なります。
