選択肢を比べる英作文では、another は『別の一つ』、other は『ほかの』、others は『ほかの人・物』、the other は『二つのうち残りの一つ』という区別が重要です。何が何個ある場面なのかを確認し、指す相手が明らかになる文章を作りましょう。
対象：英検の意見英作文と学校英語の記述を練習する中高一貫校生・高校生。級別の出題形式とは独立したオリジナル教材です。
教材の性質：登場する学校・図書館・人物・行事・数字は架空です。問題・英文・全文和訳・解答は慶英会が独自に制作しました。
まず押さえる4つの原則
- another + 単数可算名詞は不特定の『別の一つ』。another two days のような表現もある。
- other + 複数名詞や不可算名詞で『別の・ほかの』。other students など。
- others は名詞を省略した複数の代名詞。other students と others を区別する。
- the other は2つのうち残り1つ、the others は既知の集合で残っている複数を示す。
典型的な誤りと改善例
修正前：
The library has two rooms. One is quiet, and another is for discussion.
改善例：
The library has two rooms. One is quiet, and the other is for discussion.
理由：部屋が二つと明示されているので、残る一つは the other です。another でも文脈により使われますが、二者対比には the other が明確です。
オリジナル英文4題・独自20問と全解答
4題材の英文・和訳を読み、各5問の修正前英文を正確な文に直します。模範解答以外に自然な別解がある場合もありますが、元の事実・日時・人数を変えてはいけません。
図書館の二つの教室
独自英文：
A fictional library has exactly two study rooms. One room is quiet, and the other is for discussion. There are three desks in the quiet room and four in the discussion room. The librarian has not decided whether to add another room next year.
原文の和訳：架空の図書館には自習室がちょうど2室。片方は静かな学習用、もう片方は討論用。机はそれぞれ3台と4台。翌年にさらに1室増やすかは未決定。

三つのボランティア班
独自英文：
A fictional clean-up project has three teams: A, B and C. Team A collects bottles, Team B collects paper, and Team C sorts reusable materials. The other two teams work on different materials from Team A. Organizers may add another team if enough volunteers join.
原文の和訳：架空の清掃企画にはA・B・Cの3班。Aは瓶、Bは紙、Cは再利用材料の仕分け。A以外の2班は別の物を担当。十分な協力者がいれば別班追加の可能性。

独自英文：

学習の二種類の課題
独自英文：
A fictional teacher assigns two types of writing practice: opinion essays and short summaries. One task focuses on supporting an opinion, while the other focuses on keeping the source’s meaning. Some students prefer one type, and others prefer the other. The teacher has not found one task to be universally better.
原文の和訳：架空の教師は意見英作文と英文要約の2種類を課す。一方は意見の根拠、もう一方は原文の意味保持が目的。好みは分かれ、どちらか一方が常に優れているとは判断していない。

復習の進め方
- 初日は20問すべての解答を自分で作り、誤った語形に印をつける。
- 3日後は原文の日本語だけから英語を書き、期限・人物・数量などの情報が残ったか確認する。
- 7日後は初見テーマから2〜4文の意見英作文を作り、同じ修正規則を使う。
