random sampling(無作為抽出)とは別。

The researcher observed students who chose an app, so the app was assigned randomly and proved to raise every score.

The researchers observed students’ existing app choices, so the comparison was observational rather than randomly assigned.

A fictional library analyzed two existing groups of members. Sixty members who already preferred digital books borrowed more books on average than forty members who preferred print. The researchers did not assign a reading format, and the two groups differed in age. They could not conclude that digital books themselves caused higher borrowing.

A fictional town randomly chose which of twenty comparable crossing locations would receive a new warning sign first. The report noted that the initial trial was short.
