講座や研究の英文要約でregistered（登録した）、started（開始した）、completed（修了した）、withdrew（辞退した）を同じ『参加者』とまとめると、成果が誇張されます。何人を分母にして修了率を計算したか、途中辞退の理由が分かっているかも確認しましょう。
対象：英検準2級プラス〜1級の英文要約を学ぶ中高生。級別問題の転載・模倣ではなく、本文の情報を変えずに短くまとめる技能を練習します。

最初に覚えたい4つの確認事項
- 登録人数、実際に開始した人数、修了人数は異なる場合がある。
- withdraw は途中でやめる・辞退する行為。fail や試験不合格と同じではない。
- 修了率を求めるときは分母を明示する。登録者基準と開始者基準で異なる。
- 修了者の結果だけでは辞退者を含む集団全体の効果を推測できない。
誤った要約の典型と改善
誤要約：
All forty registered students completed the course because thirty students received certificates.
正しい要約：
Of forty registered students, thirty received completion certificates; the record does not show that all registrants finished.
なぜ違うか：登録40人のうち修了30人です。10人全員が途中辞退したかどうかも、情報がなければ断定できません。
