英検準2級プラスの長文に数字が並ぶ場合、target（目標）、estimate（事前の推定）、recorded（記録した実績）、not measured（未測定）を区別しましょう。数値が同じ話題に出ても比較可能な単位とは限りません。慶英会独自の4長文24課題で数値の種類と根拠を確認します。

対象：準2級プラスReadingの内容一致や英文要約で、人数・割合・実績を誤読しやすい中高生。全資料・数値は学習用の架空設定であり、実際の調査データではありません。

4種類の数値を表で比較

300 passenger tripsは延べ300回の乗車で、300 different passengersとは異なります。数字だけでなく、その後の名詞に注目してください。

24課題の取り組み方

  2. 4択で各数字の意味と単位を確かめる。
  3. 誤った数値の説明を訂正する。
  4. 数字が比較可能か、測定していない効果を断定していないか説明する。

独自長文1｜図書館の読書講座

A town library set a target of 100 visits for a three-week reading workshop. Before it began, the organizer estimated that approximately 90 visits would be recorded. After the workshop, staff counted 76 visits. However, some people attended twice, so the number of different participants was not known. The library also received 40 questionnaires, but these were returned by only some visitors. Staff will examine feedback before deciding whether to repeat the workshop.

独自長文2｜雨水利用の節水計画

A school wanted to reduce tap-water use in its garden by 20 percent during a six-week trial. Teachers predicted that a new collection container might reduce tap-water use by around 15 percent, depending on rainfall. The records showed a 12 percent decrease compared with the earlier six-week period. However, weather conditions differed between the periods, so the school could not attribute the entire change to the container. A larger system has been proposed, but its benefits have not yet been tested.

The leader noted that registration numbers were not the same as attendance and that feedback forms did not represent every volunteer. Another clean-up is being considered, but its date is still undecided.

Before launching a four-week shuttle-bus trial, the town estimated that passengers would make 300 trips. The transport department set a higher target of 340 trips. Since some residents used the bus repeatedly, officials could not determine the number of unique passengers from these records alone. The department has suggested changing departure times, but no permanent timetable has been approved.

間違い直し｜単位と分母に注目

数字が変わった場合は、number of registered peopleとnumber of attendees、number of tripsとnumber of usersの違いを明確にしましょう。割合の変化は、比較した期間や条件が異なれば因果関係の確定にはなりません。

FAQ

Q. target 100は100人が実際に参加したという意味ですか？

いいえ。目標と実績は別です。単位がvisitsなら延べ来訪回数であることにも注意します。

Q. observedは原因を証明したという意味ですか？

観測したこと自体は因果関係の証明ではありません。本文にある測定結果を超えて断定しないようにします。
