英検準2級プラスのReadingでは、accurate(正確な)、precise(精密・具体的な)、reliable(信頼して使える)、credible(根拠があり信用できる)の違いを理解しましょう。

A student found a bus timetable online that gave departure times to the exact minute. The details looked precise, but the student later noticed that the file was two years old. Since then, the bus company had changed several routes and departure times. A newer official timetable gave less background information, but it listed the current times correctly. The student learned that precise information is not necessarily accurate: a very specific number can still be wrong if the source is outdated. Before sharing transport information with classmates, students should check when it was published and whether it still applies.

  1. Why was the earlier timetable unreliable for current travel?
    1. It listed no times.
    2. It was two years old and routes had changed.
    3. It was written on paper.
    4. It lacked photographs.
  2. Which description fits the old timetable?
    1. Accurate and current
    2. Completely unavailable
    3. Precise but not accurate for current service
    4. Only for private cars
  3. What should students check before sharing information?
    1. Publication date and current applicability
    2. Only the font size
    3. Whether the document is colorful
    4. The number of ads
The old timetable must be accurate because it shows exact minutes.
A very specific number can still be wrong if the source is outdated.

  1. B:It was two years old and routes had changed.。two years old and routes changed。
  2. C:Precise but not accurate for current service。exact minutes but outdated。
  3. A:Publication date and current applicability。when published and still applies।
  4. Precise means detailed or exact in form; accurate means matching the correct current facts.
  5. Exact-minute information may be outdated; the current official timetable should be checked.

A science club used a digital sensor to measure water temperature. The readings were precise to one decimal place, and the sensor showed almost the same number when the same sample was tested repeatedly. However, the teacher discovered that the sensor had not been calibrated correctly. A comparison with a checked thermometer showed that the readings were consistently too high. The club therefore could not treat the figures as accurate measurements, even though they looked precise and were repeatable. Students adjusted the sensor and decided to measure again before reporting their results. The experiment shows why detailed numbers and consistency alone do not guarantee correctness.

  1. What did the sensor show?
    1. Only whole numbers
    2. No measurements
    3. Values to one decimal place
    4. Results for several years
  2. Why could the data not be treated as accurate?
    1. The students had no water.
    2. The display was too large.
    3. The teacher disliked the sensor.
    4. The sensor was not calibrated correctly.
  3. What did the club decide to do?
    1. Adjust and measure again
    2. Publish immediately
    3. Remove all scientific measurements
    4. Replace the school garden
The sensor’s repeated readings proved the temperature was correct.
Detailed numbers and consistency alone do not guarantee correctness.

  1. C:Values to one decimal place。one decimal place।
  2. D:The sensor was not calibrated correctly.。incorrect calibration confirmed too high।
  3. A:Adjust and measure again。adjust then measure again।
  4. Precise readings and consistent repetition do not establish accuracy when the instrument has systematic error.
  5. Repeated results were consistently too high because calibration was incorrect.

A school project examined claims about a local park. One anonymous online message stated that all visitors wanted a new playground, but it included no survey method or evidence. A town report described a voluntary survey and explained how many registered park users had responded. The report did not include people who had not answered, so its findings were limited. Students considered the report a more credible source because it explained how the information had been collected. However, they also recognized that credibility does not mean every conclusion is certain. They planned to compare the report with other evidence before making recommendations.

  1. What was missing from the anonymous message?
    1. Any claim about a park
    2. A method and supporting evidence
    3. A date for the school project
    4. A photograph of a train
  2. Why was the town report considered more credible?
    1. It was longer than any book.
    2. It promised perfect results.
    3. It explained data collection and respondents.
    4. It contained no limitations.
  3. Which limitation remained?
    1. Nonrespondents were not represented.
    2. No one was surveyed.
    3. The park did not exist.
    4. Every visitor voted unanimously.
Because the report was credible, it proved all park visitors agreed.
Credibility does not mean every conclusion is certain.

  1. B:A method and supporting evidence。no method or evidence।
  2. C:It explained data collection and respondents.。described survey method and respondents।
  3. A:Nonrespondents were not represented.。nonrespondents not included।
  4. Credible sources explain provenance and evidence; a source can still have important limits.
  5. The report described only respondents to a voluntary survey, not every park visitor.

Students prepared an article about a trial study room. They found that school staff had recorded ninety visits, but the record did not show how many different students had used the room. One writer described the figure as ninety users and added that the room had raised examination scores. The editor checked the original records and found no comparison of test results. The editor changed the text to report ninety visits and removed the unsupported claim about grades. The newspaper would be more reliable if readers could depend on it to distinguish recorded facts from assumptions. The team planned to verify other figures before publishing.

  1. What did school staff record?
    1. Ninety different students
    2. Ninety examination scores
    3. Ninety visits
    4. Ninety new books
  2. What did the editor remove?
    1. All numbers
    2. The mention of a study room
    3. A correct visit count
    4. An unsupported claim about test scores
  3. What will the team do before publishing?
    1. Check other figures against evidence
    2. Add more unsupported claims
    3. Copy an old article without review
    4. Declare all users improved
The school proved that ninety different students improved their grades.
Readers could depend on it to distinguish recorded facts from assumptions.

  1. C:Ninety visits。recorded ninety visits।
  2. D:An unsupported claim about test scores。no test comparison, removed claim।
  3. A:Check other figures against evidence。verify other figures।
  4. Reliable reporting consistently distinguishes measured facts from unsupported assumptions.
  5. Staff recorded ninety visits, but unique users and grade improvements were not established.

FAQ

Q. credible
