英検準2級プラスのEメール・説明文では、only if(~の場合に限り)・unless(~でない限り)・provided that(~という条件で)・otherwise(そうしないと)を区別すると、利用条件・例外・結果を正確に理解できます。

  • only if A:Aが成立する場合に限る。
  • unless A:Aでない限り。例:The event will continue unless the weather becomes dangerous.
  • provided that A:Aという条件を満たす場合に。

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A town library made its research room available to students working on local history. Under the library’s fictional policy, visitors could enter the room only if an application had been approved. Applications had to describe the research topic and requested date. The librarian explained that approval was a necessary condition for entry, but it did not automatically guarantee an empty desk at every hour. Visitors with approval were asked to reserve a time slot as well. Students could use the old map collection provided that they handled the documents under staff supervision. Unless the librarian had given special permission, no one was allowed to take original maps outside the room. One student received an approval message and assumed that it also allowed him to photograph and remove every item. Staff clarified that the message covered room access, not unlimited document use. The library advised students to read the conditions carefully; otherwise, they might arrive without the required booking or misunderstand the rules. The library was open during its regular hours while the research room followed separate conditions.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A junior high school planned an English exchange day with visiting students. Families could attend the opening ceremony only if they had registered before the stated deadline. The afternoon discussion was open to confirmed student participants, provided that they had completed the short preparation activity. Unless a teacher approved an alternative, all discussion groups had to meet in the assigned rooms. The organizers sent room details by email and asked students to read them before arriving. Otherwise, participants might go to the wrong place. A parent asked whether an early registration automatically allowed the family to join the student discussion. The school explained that the family registration covered the opening ceremony, whereas the discussion required separate student confirmation and preparation. Twenty-four students were confirmed for discussion, but only eighteen had completed the preparation by Tuesday. The remaining six were contacted about their next steps.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A community center introduced a new event-day shuttle connecting a station with a local nature park. Visitors could use the free shuttle only if they had registered for the nature event and received the shuttle booking code. However, receiving a code did not guarantee that a late passenger could board a departure that had already left. The shuttle normally stopped at the west exit, unless road repairs required a change. On Thursday, the operator announced that the Saturday pickup point would move to the north exit because of maintenance. The service would run at 9:00 and 9:30 a.m., provided that weather and road conditions allowed safe operation. The organizers told registered visitors to read the updated notice; otherwise, they might wait at the old west-exit stop.

FAQ

only ifとifはどう違いますか?

unlessはif notと同じですか?
